TEHACHAPI – CA, Today Wednesday June 23rd 2009 at approximately 2:08 P.M., Kern County Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the area of Cameron Canyon, east of Tehachapi.
Approximately of 60 firefighters fought the fire.
Upon arrival crews were faced with approximately 5 acres of burning grass assisted by winds, moving rapidly west uphill towards windmills above Cameron Rd. Firefighters were able to save 4 residential structures and several vehicles at the area of origin. However, 1 mobile home and an out building were destroyed by the fire.
The Incident Commander requested support to include Patrols, Dozers and air tankers. Helicopter 407 was quickly on scene and started water drops to slow the progress of the fire. A total of 3 tankers with a lead plane arrived and dropped fire retardant to suppress the spread. Kern County Air Attack 490 provided valuable operational air support.
The fire is still being fought with good progress being made by hand crews with air support. The fire is currently approximately 150 acres. There are no reported injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
