A driver distracted by her young child choking in the back seat nearly knocked down a utility pole with her minivan Friday afternoon in Golden Hills.
As the woman drove down Golden Star Boulevard approaching Verde Street at around 1:30 p.m., her son began to choke on a piece of popcorn, emergency officials said.
With her focus squarely on her child, the woman crashed through several mailboxes, slammed into a corner utility pole and uprooted the Verde/Golden Star street sign.
When the vehicle came to a stop in a vacant dirt lot, the child was no longer choking, officials said.
Neither the driver nor the child was injured in the single-vehicle crash.
The utility pole, on the corner of Golden Star and Verde, was badly damaged at its base, and workers from Southern California Edison arrived to brace the pole and shut off power to the immediate area.
