If the first three games are any indication of things to come, the Lady Warriors seem to be making a strong case to mirror the success of last year's SSL championship season.

The Lady Warriors easily dispatched their opponents in pool play at the Bakersfield Lead-Off Classic, taking down Shafter (16-1), Cesar Chavez - Delano (6-0) and East-Bakersfield (7-0).

"We still have some tweaking we need to do but overall we're happy with the start," said head coach Tracy Goodell. "Basically right now I think were ahead of where we thought we'd be."

Maria Berryman led a 10-hit effort over Shafter with a 3-3 performance, followed by Ashley Carter going 2-2 in five innings.

Kesley Kapitzke got the win at pitcher, recording seven strikeouts in three innings, while also hitting a triple and double at the plate.

In Mountain Softball's second game versus Cesar Chavez, Bre Farinas recorded the victory in the circle with three strikeouts in a one-hitter, while Kesley Kapitzke, Ashley Carter, Hannah Ricker, Maria Berryman, Lacey Perez, Kristen Tapia and Tarah Steinbach all recorded hits.

"We like the combination we have this year with (Kapitzke) and (Farinas). They're like our Koufax and Drysdale," added Goodell. "They both are great pitchers with different styles and Ashley (Carter) has been calling wonderful games."

Tehachapi (3-0) capped round-robin play over East-Bakersfield, with Farinas again recording the win at pitcher with five strikeouts recorded, giving up only three hits.

In addition to her strong effort in the circle, Farinas also contributed at the plate against East with a triple, while Erin Golackson, Tarah Steinbach and Maria Berryman all going 2-3 and Kesley Kapitzke hitting a homerun.

Tehachapi also played Garces in the tournament finals last Saturday, with results to be highlighted next week.

Up next for the Lady Warriors is the Glinn and Giordano Driller Tournament, with early round games slated against Atascadero on Thursday, Mar. 11 at 8 p.m. and East-Bakersfield on Friday, Mar. 12 at 3:30 p.m. Games will be played at Green Acres near Bakersfield.
