On June 19 and 20, Tehachapi Martial Arts Center hosted a dynamic seminar taught by Grand Master Pellegrini and Master David Rivas. The credentials and honors respectfully of Grand Master Pellegrini are from over 40 years of experience and training with military and law enforcement agencies throughout the world. He is recognized and honored by scores of martial arts institutions and associations along with Master David Rivas, his training counterpart.
The self defense seminar this year was taught in two parts, the first on the 19th for “Defense Against Bullies.” This junior seminar was engineered for children ages 4 to 12 and focused on ground survival techniques. As a parent I realize it is a frightening thought, 'ground survival techniquies,' its difficult to make the decision of opening up the existence of violence that our children may be faced with, but the reality of violence in the schools, parks and everyday events are certain, and we are not always there.
"Self-reliance is the key to survival and survival is the key." The ground survival course for the junior seminar included hands on training guided by Mr. Rivas's focused energy. Mr. Rivas was able to maneuver through ages 4 to 12 years of age while keeping them engaged. Many parents commented on the enthusiam he created as well as being able to create a cooperative training environment. Every student participated with great effort, and earned certificates in self defense. Congratulations to all 25 children who participated.
Following on June 20th was the adult seminar taught by Grand Master Pellegrini and Master Rivas. The course in 'Chon Tu Kwan HapKido- combat Hapkido' sounds impressive as it should. Both instructors are Masters by right of years of experiance; in person they are humorous, humble and disciplined in character.
The seminar was both physical and emotional, discussing the times and state of our nation in a humorous, but sensitive and serious tone. The simple fact is in these times the lack of a supportive economy leads to a climbing crime rate, crimes are more desperate and violent. After an opening demonstration and discussion, the class broke into pairs to practice hands on self defense, realistic grappling techniques, and ground survival. The atmosphere was very cooperative and engaging, and Mr. Pellegrini and Mr. Rivas worked with every individual in the class.
At the close of the seminar it was an honor to watch, as Master Ivan Jadric received his promotion to 6th degree black belt in Hapkido, he also currently holds a 6th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Several senior students also received their promotions in Hapkido. Mr. Demus promoted to 3rd degree black belt, Mr. Berchtold promoted to 2nd degree black belt, and Ida Tommysen promoted to 1st degree black belt. In Tae Kwon Do, Mr. Hector Uribe was promoted to 4th degree black belt. Also receiving certificates in self defense were the 40 adults and young adults who completed the seminar. Former training or not, it was an opportunity to learn what we can do for ourselves in uncertain situations.
