White and Bailey named top coaches

After successful seasons as coaches for Tehachapi High in 2009, varsity volleyball coach Sally White and varsity boys tennis coach John Bailey were named as top 10 coaches of the year in Kern County.

White helped guide the Lady Warriors volleyball team to their first-ever section championship, finishing with a 29-5 (10-0 SSL) record. Tehachapi also hosted a state playoff game for the first time, and finished as the 10th best team in central California according to maxpreps.

The boy’s tennis team reached the section championship last year for the first time under Bailey's direction, and won their first-ever South Sequoia League championship with a 10-0 record. Bailey also helped coach Tyler Thoms and David Croy to a league championship and third place section finish in doubles.

Mountain Wrestling has impressive start at section

The Mountain Matmen had a good first day of action at the CIF Sequoia/Sierra championships at Shafter last week, with Niko Taliulu (285 pounds) and Will Avery (189 pounds) highlighting the effort with semifinal appearances.

Other wrestlers that were still in contention after the first day included Noe Madera (112 pounds), Paul Cronin (125 pounds), Ernesto Dezubiria (130 pounds), Trevor Reed (135 pounds), Ryker Newman (140 pounds), Jacob Gamble (145 pounds) and Trent Gardner (160 pounds).

Each of Tehachapi's nine wrestlers still in contention are vying for a berth in the Central Section Grand Masters, the final tune-up meet before state competition.

Overall, the Warriors were in seventh place in the overall team standings at the sequoia/sierra section championships leading into last Saturday's action. Full coverage of the meet will be covered in next week's issue.
