Teen drivers are found at fault in 66 percent of all fatal collisions they are involved in, although they only represent 4 percent of the state's licensed drivers. The leading cause of death for Americans 15 to 20 years old is motor vehicle collisions.
In response to these staggering statistics, the California Highway Patrol will present the Start Smart program in Tehachapi on Feb. 10, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Golden Hills Community Service District meeting room, 12415 Reeves St.
The Start Smart program is an interactive driver safety education class which targets newly licensed and future teenage drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 years old and their parents or guardians. It is an instructional program designed to share with teens and their parents the consequences of immature and dangerous driving behaviors.
The program is approximately two hours long and parents and guardians are encouraged to attend, though it is not mandatory. This is a free program. Please RSVP to Officer Ed Smith at (661) 824-2408.
