The past two weeks the Tehachai High School cross country team competed against West and Mira Monte in non-league clashes at Brite Lake, earning a handful of team victories in the varsity and jayvee divisions.
Against Mira Monte last Wednesday, the varsity men won 25-33, despite the Lions taking first and second place. THS nearly clinched the rest of the top ten spots by grabbing third through eighth place to seal the win. Joseph Budai (21.06) led the team with a third place finish overall. Freshmen Wes Poulson (21:06) and Ethan Zehr (21:35) served notice as rising underclassmen in the varsity division by finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Aidan Gillam (21:35), Davin Domingo (21:37) and Oscar Machado (21:41) all followed in sixth through eighth place.
The varsity girls won 20-35, led by Jessica Perreault (22:56) in first, Alexis Namey (24:03) in third, Elana Markusic (25:14) in fourth, Tori Perrault (25:25) in fifth and Angie Kroeger (26:21) in seventh place.
Rounding out the scoring against Mira Monte was the jayvee boys winning 17-42, led by runners Doug Buckley (25:12), Jacob Heier (25:19) and Dean Hoisington (27:08). The jayvee girls lost to Mira Monte, 15-50.
Earlier in the month, the varsity men and women lost to West, losing 17-43 and 25-30, respectively.
Top runners were Joseph Budai (20:56 -- sixth), Wes Poulson (20:57 -- seventh), Aidan Gillam (21:37 -- ninth), Oscar Machado (22:18 -- 10th), Alexis Namey (23:56 -- first), Biz Sorvino (26:37 -- fifth), Angie Kroeger (27:07 -- seventh) and Elena Markusic (27:23 -- ninth). In the jayvee division, top runners were Ethan Zehr (22:34) and Jacob Heier (26:02).
Mountain Cross Country also recently competed in the Wasco Invite.
While the varsity men did not medal, Joseph Budai and Davin Domingo became THS's first runners to run a sub-20 minute time in a meet this year with Budai posting a 19:12 and Domingo nailing a 19:56 in the three-mile race.
The Lady Warriors were led by the tandem efforts of Jessica Perreault (20:36) and Alexis Namey (21:16) finishing fourth and eighth overall for medals.
In the jayvee division two-mile run, Justin Amparan (13:11), Alex Bullard (13:18) and Mark Caldwell (14:14) all medaled for Tehachapi, while the jayvee girls took second place as a team with Angie Kroeger (14:36 - sixth) Biz Sorvino (14:44- seventh) and Julie Stickney (16:12) all medaling. Frosh-Soph runners Wes Poulson (12:27) and Ethan Zehr (12:45) finished 11th and 16th overall to medal for their efforts.
The cross country team will next travel to Lake Ming on Wednesday, Sept 11, to compete in the Blade Invite.
