I miss “Creature Feature” and “Monster Rally.”

Those two late-night horror/sci-fi movie shows made my weekends as a kid.

The movies weren’t actually scary, but crashing over at friends’ houses was always fun - you know, the buddies with the “cool” parents? We used to stay up until 2 a.m. watching B-movies like “The Leech Woman,” “The Killer Shrews,” “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” eating junk food until we were sick.

As a fan, you have to give props to the creators of those films. What made them think they were going to actually scare people?

But who cares, they were fun. Being so bad made them the classics they are.

Following the career of Bakersfield’s Hectic Films over the past few years, I’ve seen their progression from mischievous indie filmmakers - to scoring commercial gigs with some pretty big companies.

In the spirit of the classic B-movie maker - the Hectic Films crew have opened up another can of worms in the Bakersfield film community with some of the most cleverly produced films I’ve seen since 1974’s “Drive In Massacre.”

Pretty good for a couple of guys who got their start making church films - Ed Wood would be so proud.

This issue not only highlights the movie talents of Hectic, but other up and coming talents from right here in Bakersfield.
