Well, this week is going to break at least one record for me: I've never had more than 15 dogs on my property at once! By Tuesday of this coming week, I will have sixteen dogs here-twelve of them are foster dogs that need new homes! Its raining dogs out there, shelter rescues, puppies, pregnant dog moms going into labor while trying to cross busy streets, owner-surrenders, evictions, forclosures...it really never ends, even in our little mountain town. That is why STOP began and why we ARE going to get a shelter built here. Every day we have to say no because we don't have space, money or sometimes even just a safe place for a stray dog to spend one night. STOP is having its next Adoption Day on Saturday May 10th, 12-3 pm at Canine Creek Dog Wash and Boutique. If you have evr thought about adding another furry friend to your pack, and just in time for the summer fun that kids and their companion animals have, then come on down next Saturday. I know that I have neverhad such a wonderful group of great dogs to choose from. They won't all be there, of course (calm down Susie, really!!) but there should be a wonderful selection of dogs there, from tiny to large and they all deserve to go home with you! Remember that scared little girl Blue Heeler from the back yard in Golden Hills? She came here about three weeks ago,spent some time in solitary and then I moved her into my outdoor yard with the pack-and miracle of miracles-she became a real dog! The power of the pack is a truly wonderful thing to behold. Just this past week I put her on Petfinder, figuring that she'd be here for months. This past week, she started coming into the house and wanting attention and today.....a family who saw her on Petfindercom, contacted me by email and only saw photos, drove all the way down from Visalia and took her home. She wasn't happy being in a kennel for the trip but this fanily was so gentle, so understanding, so loving...they will give her the time she needs to come out of her shell and become the dog she was meant to be! Thank you Chris in Golden Hills for saving her life! For naming her "God's grace". Thank you Joe for helping me to catch her and bring her here. Thank you everyone who wrote in support of my efforts...I will certainly sleep well tonight! Good night little Laska, good night. Newton and Missy: twin hairballs, not even two years old. Rescued from a puppy mill and have languished at the shelter until coming here. Slightly reserved but it doesn't take long to come out to play. Cody: young male chi x, about 15 lbs. Was roaming in Alpine with his friend Ranger, already adopted. Cody likes to chase cats but is a lap dog waiting to find the right lap. Cesar: Male Shar Pei/terrier mix with white eyes! Sweet and loving. STOP dog. We hope to see you there! Leslie at Canine Canyon Ranch Meet "Laska", so named by her first rescuer, caring neighbor Chris in Golden Hills. Chris is Ukranian and she named the dog Laska, which means "by God's Grace", a very appropriate name for this little orphan girl. My husband picked up Laska's old "doghouse" form the abandoned house and she spent at least part of the night inside the nose cone, as the blankets were wet. from her We ended up getting mostly rain instead of snow and it wasn't too cold. She simply refuses to go into the other dry doghouses there. She was smart enough to use her teeth to pull the blankets out the door of the large doghouse-because the food bowl was in the back corner!! Smart girl. I did get a look at her teeth this morning and she appears to be quite young, about 6-9 months old. Why anyone would get a possibly purebred puppy and then stick her in a back yard to terrorize is beyond comprehension. She is still terrified of other dogs so it will be some time before she can be moved over to the yard with the regular pack. She will be here for quite some time. If anyone knows any rehabilitation rescues, please feel free to call me or email. I'm really not qualified to work with dogs that are this scared. She is going to take a lot of patient rehabilitation and I need to continue my mutt rescue work with the pack of 10 that are ready for new homes already. Leslie at Canine Canyon Ranch Good morning everyone. On this beautiful spring day, I have a sad little story to tell you. This little girl, a very young Queensland Heeler/Shepherd mix, was rescued yesterday from the yard of a house about to be auctioned off at the corner of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria in Golden Hills. Some very caring neighbors, Chris and Joe, had seen the family who had the dog move out, then another family who stayed in the house was throwing rocks and abusing this poor dog, who was locked in a backyard dog run. When the last family was evicted they simply left the dog in the yard, inside a 6 foot wood fence, no way to escape and no food or water. Someone finally opened the gate and she ran loose around the neighborhood for a few days, always going back to the only home she had ever known: A nose cone from an old windmill, with some torn blankets inside, covered with mud and filth. To get back to this hell, she had to pass the bodies of two dead cats, who had been lying there along the side of the house, baking in the sun for at least 2-3 weeks. This poor little puppy has had virtually no contact with other animals and probably no contact from any kind people in most of her short life but she still lets me pet her and was letting the neighbor Chris come and give her food and water for the past month. Luckily, CHris and Joe managed to get her trapped back in her hellish yard and they called me. I went out the next day and between Joe and I, we managed to get her into a crate in less than ten minutes. Wet cat food does the trick every time! This scared little girl is not at all dog social (an introduction to my most friendly calm dog left her shaking horribly), so she has to stay in my outdoor kennels. She is eating and thanks to the neighbors feeding her, her coat actually looks very good. She's been wormed and I plan to pick up her "doghouse" and her blankets todya so she can have something familiar. She spent last night curled up outside on the cold dirt and wouldn't go into any of the four doghouses filled with clean dry blankets avaialble to her. She is very scared of men, so I can guess who was throwing the rocks. Canine Canyon Ranch is overly full with fourteen dogs (even after 5 were adopted last weekend at the Tehachapi Pet Lodge adoption day), so if there are any kind souls (females to start with!!) out there that would be willing to provide this girl with a safe haven while she recouperates and regains her trust of humans, please call me at 661-823-0111. A foster home with a secure yard and people to get her used to kind humans and maybe one other dog would be ideal. She just needs time but I do believe she will come around. I can provide food and vaccines. There are other area rescues participating also Dogmomma These two hobos have been seen in the Alpine Forest area for the past two and a half months-through the whole snowy winter! After staying here and there and everywhere, Ranger and his little friend finally made it to sanctuary at Canine Canyon Ranch and are being adopted into a home together! Thank your guard at the main guard shack for first spotting these two, then finding them a temporary home, then the little rascals went walkabout again and Cristina, an AF resident herself, got them to me. Ranger was at Saturday's Adoption Day at Tehachapi Pet Lodge and was seen by Carol. When his little friend was missing him too much, she decided that she just couldn't separate them. These fast friends and fellow adventurers will now have a nice safe warm haven from the cold and will stay together. So, if any of you Alpine Forest residents saw these two and wondered where they lived, the answer was nowhere! Thanks to any and all who obviously fed and sheltered these two from the harsh winter of 2008-know that you probably saved their lives and certainly they appreciate it! This is Sunny, a new dog to Canine Canyon Ranch as of this Sunday morning 3/30/08. Sunny is a 3-4 year old mastiff and will be going to a breed rescue soon if we can't place her locally. She is a completely housebroken, very calm and well-behaved dog who hasn't had the best life so far. She is already spayed and current on her shots. She started out life as an abused young puppy in Mexicali, was rescued by someone, had another home with young children and the mom got sick and just spent two months at an adoptive home who didn't understand that mastiffs need more than 3 cups of food per day! She lost about 20 pounds there. Sunny is about 90 pounds now and needs to put on some weight. She has a beautiful dappled grey/brown coat with white socks on her feet and a dash on her muzzle. She also has very warm brown eyes that speak to your soul. Sunny needs a forever home this time, not someone that doesn't understand her breed and her needs completely. Both are being rescued from the Bakersfield shelter and are very social with other dogs, playful and housebroken. Missy is the shy one, but just until she gets ot know you, but not Nelson! You may remember the story of Ellie and her puppies. Well, Ellie is adopted to her new home and will be spayed in a month or two 9when those milk-givers go away!). I posted the litter of twelve puppies on Petfinder and received almost 200 hits last week. Today we had an Adoption Day at Canine Creek Dog Wash and nine puppies have been adopted-some as far away as Harbor City and Huntington Beach! See what mandatory spay/neuter laws do? Scarcity of puppies!! Well, there are three adorable puppies left, two males and a female. I will be at Canine Creek again tomorrow (new location next to Snyder/Teh. Blvd.), Sunday March 16th, from 12-3 with the three puppies and a few other older puppies and dogs for adoption. You can call me Sunday morning at 823-0111 and I'll email you photos, but here they are in all their cuteness. The puppies are border collie/lab, with a lab personality and border collie markings. They are 8 weeks on 3-17, have their first shots and are adoptable for a donation to Canine Canyon Ranch Rescue with a contract specifying they will be fixed by 5 months.
