Urgent Request from Dogmomma at Canine Canyon Ranch Rescue

Hello everyone:  Most of you know me as "the dog lady."  I rescue larger mutts, get them fixed and find them new homes.  I have found homes for over 200 dogs in the last six years.  And I don't do puppies. (You can just guess what is coming, can't you?)

So, Wednesday morning Ithis week, 'm getting ready to go to the vet with an unspayed female and, guess what?  She's suddenly VERY pregnant.  I am overwhelmed at the moment with Gentle Ben's recovery, a 210-pound older Dane that I can't find a home for who hates puppies, and five foster dogs.  I also have six owner-surrender or stray dogs on a waiting list.  I will have to shut down my dog rescue for 2-3 months unless I can find someone willing to take Ellie and keep her while she has her puppies in a nice stress-free warm environment.(NOT my house I assure you).

She is a wonderful young female border collie/black lab mix, about 2 years old.  I'm guessing she is due within the next three weeks.  I am doing some detective work with the family who surrendered her (they lost their house) to see what daddy might be like.  I can place the puppies at eight weeks old in LA County (where they have a mandatory spay/neuter law and puppies aren't discarded like trash!!) and Ellie will find a home easily once she is spayed.  She is fine with other dogs, not an alpha, OK with cats, doesn't jump (short BC legs) and is mostly housebroken and uses a dog door. I can provide food, shots for the new puppies.

Please forward this link to anyone you think may be able to help!! Calls to (661) 823-0111 or email to caninecanyonranch@wildblue.net.

Thanks all of you animal lovers.

I just wanted to say that I think you are doing a great thing.  If I had a home of my own, I would seriously consider taking Ellie.  I really hope you find some kind soul to take care of her and her puppies.

Can somebody please tell me why in the heck Tehachapi doesn't have a shelter???   I see homeless dogs running around all the time hungry and cold...  Just give me a simple reason as to WHY WHY WHY we don't have a shelter here??????

Leslie, I think the Canine Creek staff found a foster home for Ellie.  We've passed on your contact information.  Please call me on Saturday to confirm the dog has been picked up.  Susie

Sparks, here's the 2-part short answer:  1) Because the City of Tehachapi doesn't want to be held financially responsible for what is, essentially, a Kern County problem.  The vast majority of people in the Tehachapi Valley don't actually live or pay taxes in the City.  And 2) because Kern County Supervisor Don Maben doesn't feel that we NEED one.  Back in October I asked him that very question when I attended the Tehachapi Business Outlook Conference.  His answer was "That's not going to happen.  You have a shelter in Mojave."  Frankly, I didn't get the impressed from his response that the issue was important to him either.

Hey all:  Thanks for the encouraging words today.  Shellie at Canine Creek Dog Wash made calls ALL day and found a wonderful person who is planning to pick up Ellie tomorrow and foster her until the puppies are weaned at 8 weeks.  Thank you so much Shellie and Susie for being smart enough to hire her (and the foster mom who used to work there too!)  Now If I can just find a home for Bruno "Pet of the Week" and Ben the collie...asking too much?

Susie it's like being stuck between a rock and a hard spot.  Obviously it wasn't important to Maben, but I don't guess the fact that the Mohave shelter has euthanizes hundreds of dogs and cats in just a few days after they receive them  means anything to him either.  Perhaps he should look in the eyes of these poor dogs and cats prior to them being killed simply because of human stupidity.  I know you are trying your best to do what you can... I respect that.

People, If you can't keep a animal make sure it has a proper home before you leave town and abandon it.  When you leave your pet behind, odds are it goes to Mohave and it is killed.  So no matter how stupid you are, when you abandon an animal the very least you could do is get a hold of a resource like Canine Canyon Ranch, Canine Creek, or the Tehachapi HUMANE Society and make sure your pet has a chance of survival after you leave it behind.

With a discount voucher it only cost around 20 bucks to spay or neuter a dog or cat.  The biggest idiot in the village is capable of being responsible for an animal, and if you don't have the $20.00 to spay or neuter yourr pet ... than ASK SOMEONE FOR HELP.

I'm sorry, but this issue pisses me off to no end.... There should be a law that punishes ignorance, and neglect of animals.

If you can't take care of an animal which is a FOREVER JOB, then DON'T buy or adopt one.

Hi My name is Shawn and yes I am going to foster Ellie.  I wish I could do more and I hand it to everyone who works so hard to protect our non-speaking, loving animals.  I have fostered other animals, but I think fostering a mama dog is going to be the best yet.  I will try to keep everyone up to date on her status and when the babies are here.  I will be picking her up at 10 am Saturday so she has a good amount of time to settle in before she whelps.  Thanks again for thinking of me and thanks again for all of your work and efforts.

Shawn

My neighbor rescued her beloved Maggie from the Mojave shelter just before she was to be put down. She (my neighbor) recently took down a large donation of items and food for Mojave. The person there told her to next time bring it in during the week so it could be locked up. Why? Because the staff from the Bakersfield shelter comes down on weekend and takes everything that isn't locked away from Mojave for their shelter. How wrong is that?
