Animal Abandonment still happening in Tehachapi!
Good morning everyone. On this beautiful spring day, I have a sad little story to tell you. This little girl, a very young Queensland Heeler/Shepherd mix, was rescued yesterday from the yard of a house about to be auctioned off at the corner of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria in Golden Hills. Some very caring neighbors, Chris and Joe, had seen the family who had the dog move out, then another family who stayed in the house was throwing rocks and abusing this poor dog, who was locked in a backyard dog run. When the last family was evicted they simply left the dog in the yard, inside a 6 foot wood fence, no way to escape and no food or water. Someone finally opened the gate and she ran loose around the neighborhood for a few days, always going back to the only home she had ever known: A nose cone from an old windmill, with some torn blankets inside, covered with mud and filth. To get back to this hell, she had to pass the bodies of two dead cats, who had been lying there along the side of the house, baking in the sun for at least 2-3 weeks. This poor little puppy has had virtually no contact with other animals and probably no contact from any kind people in most of her short life but she still lets me pet her and was letting the neighbor Chris come and give her food and water for the past month. Luckily, CHris and Joe managed to get her trapped back in her hellish yard and they called me. I went out the next day and between Joe and I, we managed to get her into a crate in less than ten minutes. Wet cat food does the trick every time! This scared little girl is not at all dog social (an introduction to my most friendly calm dog left her shaking horribly), so she has to stay in my outdoor kennels. She is eating and thanks to the neighbors feeding her, her coat actually looks very good. She's been wormed and I plan to pick up her "doghouse" and her blankets todya so she can have something familiar. She spent last night curled up outside on the cold dirt and wouldn't go into any of the four doghouses filled with clean dry blankets avaialble to her. She is very scared of men, so I can guess who was throwing the rocks. Canine Canyon Ranch is overly full with fourteen dogs (even after 5 were adopted last weekend at the Tehachapi Pet Lodge adoption day), so if there are any kind souls (females to start with!!) out there that would be willing to provide this girl with a safe haven while she recouperates and regains her trust of humans, please call me at 661-823-0111. A foster home with a secure yard and people to get her used to kind humans and maybe one other dog would be ideal. She just needs time but I do believe she will come around. I can provide food and vaccines. We will be at Canine Creek's Birthday Bash/Grand Opening Party from 10-6 on Saturday, April 5th-come and see all of the wonderful dogs available for adoption and see their stories at www.caninecanyonranch.org. It breaks my heart that people can be so cruel to a helpless animal. Thank you, Leslie, for taking her in. She looks too frightened at the moment, but if you think she can tolerate a clean up, bring her to see me next week. I'll be happy to give her a bath for you at no charge. Sounds like she could use a little TLC. posted by

Leslie, once again, you are providing the light at the end of the tunnel for this innocent furry friend who has already had a rough start in life; if it wasn't for you and the kind neighbors, this would have a terrible ending. The people who moved out due to foreclosure should be held accountable, for animal cruelty; the others who moved in afterwards have no soul and no conscience, torturing this sweet dog. This is Tehachapi, people, let's band together to make something good happen; I know we can ~ So you who read this story and do not comment, think long and hard about what you are not making that commitment to pony up and make your voice heard. If by chance the TN reads this blog, you should do your civic duty and write a series regarding the latest dilemma to hit hard: Foreclosure and how certain people abandon their "pets" ~ In case you haven't beel following the news, TN, it is an epidemic; do a story about it, instead of continually writing too many soft articles that most people are not interested in . . . read the other blogs; get involved; what a concept. Spring is just the right time for starting over, so with all your efforts, Leslie, and those of the caring community of Tehachapi, we can pull together and do the right thing; that's what we are here for, to help others. What should the furry friend be named; let's personalize her so we can follow her progress. Thank you, again, for letting us know what is here, right in our backyard; it is beyond shameful. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make. Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

Tick-tock; 35 people have read this article and only two had the courage to reply; that speaks volumes . . . the silence is deafening. However, to be fair, it's still early in the day, so hopefully, the usual amount of bloggers will weigh in, sooner than later.
Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.

It doesn't just break my heart - it angers me to no end. That anger leads to frustration. I would love, love to chain those people in a cage and heave large bricks at them. I realize that's not the answer, but it sure would make me feel better. What is it going to take though, to fix this problem? Can it be fixed? My own Nell was abandoned in a backyard when the owner's home was foreclosed on and they just left her. Thank goodness there are Leslies and others like her in this world who step up to the plate. Tehachapi! PLEASE SUPPORT STOP and help us meet our goal of a no-kill shelter. A dog is the only one who will love you more than he loves himself. posted by

It is frightening that someone could just leave their dog like that and it frightens me even more that someone could hurt this dog, makes me wonder what they could do to a human? I wish people would start being responsible for their actions and when they are not I wish there were some more severe consequences. There are organizations that are out here that can help you find a home for your pet instead of leaving them behind to basically die. posted by

Hi all: Just and update on the little girl. She does appear to be possibly a purebred blue merle Australian Cattle Dog. He ears are a little large though...hmmm. She is doing as well as can be expected. I called my wonderful hubby (who also lives with the 14 dogs in our house!) and asked him to swing by her old hellhole and pick up the nose cone she was living under and I went by and grabbed one of the flthy blankets so she will at least have something with her smell on it. I hope that helps her to find shelter this evening when we expect snow at our elevation. I had a chance to see Joe and he had buried the dead cat. He had a little more info too. The cat was killed by the family's "other dog" that escaped the yard. I guess they took that dog with them, as I didn't see any fresh graves in the back yard-and we looked!! That would have gotten me to call AC, although not sure how much good that would have done. I was contacted by Sam ta the Loop and he asked me to write an article for the next issue. I've been thinking about the min pin that was put to sleep after being hit on Highline and wondered what its name was, naming the Queensland after that dog would be a nice tribute. A little bit of great news, Sunny the older female mastiff mix was adopted this morning and Mugen the mastiff puppy goes to his new home on Friday-what a cutie-too bad you'll all miss meeting him at Saturday's Adoption Day. Well, time to update my website and Petfinder too! Thanks for all the dialogue!! Dogmomma posted by

I just want to say thank you to you for taking care of the helpless animals in our area. Every time I read one of these stories it makes me wish I had 2 acres of dog-friendly land - little birds to chase, plenty of grass to loll on, and trees to mark to their heart's content - so I could be a foster mom. As it is, I'm in a small apartment with 2 cats (both adopted) with a paltry 25x25 foot backyard: not conducive to dog happiness. Thank you, fosters! You are doing great things for "the least of these," as Christ says. My new little kitten Fox was fostered by the wonderful Peggy Mikkelson. Thanks again, Peggy! And I think an article - or a running column - is a great idea. There are plenty of animals who need attention and plenty of people who deserve attention for what they are doing. And a column that is constantly in people's faces might make them think, "Hey, instead of just leaving the dog to die when I move, I'll call the Humane Society or STOP or Canine Creek." And I'm pretty sure that it will encourage people to support these organizations. posted by

Thanks for the info, Gillfish; I must be as dumb as a bucket of rocks; I totally thought the blog originated from Leslie. Question: Does the TN have to give their approval first (I can't imagine that since there are so many blogs to view); is that why you are saying TN originated the story; I am confused, but not disturbed (ha-ha) . . . Please enlighten me on the rules/etiquette of blogging 101, do tell. Anyway, whatever the source (I still think it's Dogmomma), this is an extremely important topic that needs alot of coverage.

Dogmomma you are the best. You & Susie (Canine Creek) are so awesome. you guys do so much for these animals. Susie came into the paper yesterday and told me about this story and how it made her cry, I can not even imagine what kind of person could do this. Thank you for the blogs. Oh and DonMar to help with your confusion, Gillfish said website not blog. We all know the great person that did the blog.

This is so sad. I drive by that house every day. I wish I could foster her for you, but I have two large males who are really kind and sweet, but they might make her uncomfortable if she's skittish. Thanks for helping our community. posted by

Through the hard work of a select few, many are saved. I could rant and rave for hours on the anger that rises in me when I read / hear about pet abandonment. I'll spare you because I have come to the conclusion that those type of people do not read the blog, newspaper, or anything more socially relevant than a beer bottle.
Tomorrow, Saturday April 5, will be a fantastic event at Canine Creek. There will be a half dozen pet adoption groups offering some of the sweetest adoptables in California. Even if you're not really looking for a buddy, stop by and have a look, you'll fall in love. If you are experiencing a life change or suspect something coming (job transfer to a new location, moving, etc) and may have to give up a current pet, PLEASE come and talk to someone about help finding a new home for your pet.
Tomorrows event will feature vendors, fantastic raffle prizes (come and buy a ticket or 20) and an amazing group of people trying to help and save furry friends like so many that are dumped in and around our town. So please, grab a few bucks and head on down to the corner of Tehachapi Blvd. & Snyder between 10 AM & 6 pm. Buy raffle tickets, win really cool stuff, see the new Canine Creek location, adopt a dog, or just stop by for a visit. I'll be there and hope to see you there as well. posted by

PictureThis, You are right on the money, from A to Z in your above message; cruelty towards animals makes my blood boil, and that's just for starters. Leslie deserves a medal, at the very least; she is a miracle-worker, to put it mildly; let's hope that "Laska" will enjoy her new freedom/surroundings with each new day.
On a much lighter and way brighter note, indeed, Canine Creek is becoming quite the place to get away from it all and enjoy the local surroundings; the staff (and owners) are top-notch, and the store is a thing of beauty, even from a human's point of view, LOL. The mechanical talking dog is too cute, and quite entertaining, especially at yesterday's Birthday Celebration; there were so many nice people, vendors, and alot of big and small dogs to meet and greet ~ something for everyone. posted by
