Microscopic Parking Spaces

Well, here is yet another disturbing side effect of modern development: microscopic parking lots and spaces.  My wife and I went to the new shopping center on Tucker, where Subway and Del Taco are, this weekend.  I was driving my F-150 because I had been hauling trash and tree limbs, and I had one heck of a time fitting into the parking spaces there.  Not only is the parking lot very confined, but the spaces are so small it's unbelievable.  I watched a guy in an Expedition try to maneuver into a spot and he had to back up about four or five times, not because he was a poor driver but because it simply is not physically possible to pull right into a spot there with a large vehicle.

I already know the answer to this question, but I have to ask it anyway, what the heck were the developers thinking???!!!  There are lots of farms and horses in Tehachapi and the surrounding area which means there are lots of large trucks!  Gives us some room!  But of course, I know that a parking space itself does not directly generate revenue.  It does, however, do so indirectly.  And I for one will be hesitant to go to a place where I can't easily fit my truck, and only have six inches on each side!  I love Tehachapi, but this is just another step toward urbanization, with this little town slowly becoming more like big cities.  Bummer.

Is there any law that states you can not take up two spaces for your big truck?

When I was stationed in South Korea some years ago, I thought the road builders wasted a lot of money panting lines on the highway for lanes. For example, it was common for either side of the highway that had 2, 3, or 4 lanes; you'd see the Koreans driving in their own self-proclaimed lane.

job if the parking lots are on Private property then  don't think any laws apply except maybe hadicap...........I feel your pain Greg. Small parking spots are stupid.....What also makes no sense is when they put flower planters in the parking spaces like they did over in the Wall greens and city slickers parking lots.

gube, you're such an innocent...of course, the design of that parking lot had to be fully compliant with all the proper standards, including handicapped provisions, number of spaces, and of course, roadway and parking space dimensions.

Unfortunately for F-150 truck drivers, however, the number of spaces required per square foot of business is very high (gotta accommodate that once-a-year, day after Thanksgiving shopping crush you know) while the required dimensions per stall is very low...I believe 9' wide is what they provided in that lot, although you can see even 8' widths labeled "COMPACT".

Not the way it ought to be done, for all the reasons you note, especially here.  A City Planner with a Clue would recognize that, release the developer from the need to provide as much total parking (measured in spaces) and require each space to be larger.  Fat chance of that with the incumbent.

While you're critiquing parking lots, have you noticed the blind corner caused by the dumpster enclosure in front of Starbucks?  Wonder how many trips to Maaco that baby's gonna cause....

Boy, now you've got me goin!  I can't recall the dumpster enclosure specifically, but in that same parking lot is the drive-up Wells Fargo ATM.  I can't get into that tiny little slot either without backing up, so I usually just hop the curb!

PD what do you mean.......''gube, you're such an innocent'' ???...

it's just a term of endearment, gube...for believing in private property rights in this day and age....

That lot is a disgrace - my favorite part is the curb that is directly between your right wheel and Tucker Road when you turn right out of the Wine shop area...my guess is that that comes from a plan revision which wasn't quite cleaned up....

Hmmm maybe the developers are seeing into the future and they know because gas prices are sooo high, we'll all be driving small cars! This is a little off topic, but does anyone know what bank is going into that shopping center by Subway and Del Taco?

Park on the street or in the lot near the street.  Most people pig-pile into the closest slots, even waiting for that gem right outside the business's door.  I'll swing down a few slots and get right in and beat them to the door.  I figure the walk is good for me.

Mimi, I think I heard it was going to be a Well's Fargo bank.

Not only are the parking spaces narrow, but once you finally get in one, you can't open the door to get out!   No wonder there are so many dings on our car doors.    I am very careful not to bang my car door into the next car, but unfortunately not everybody is as careful.   I have changed my strategy lately and have begun to park 'way out' rather than close to the front entrance of whatever store/restaurant I am visiting.   It gives me more room to park and I get some exercise walking across the parking lot.

Cool thanks countygirl! I was hoping it would be an actual full branch of kern schools or union bank of CA. It's a pain in the butt to get in and out of those banks half the time. I might just have to switch.
