While you were sleeping.
I burned the midnight oil last night to bring you these two pictures. I drove down to Vandenberg Air Force Base to watch the launch of the Delta 2 rocket carry the Jason 2 satellite into space. 12 comments from 7 users

Nice pics, Job. That's one thing I miss about the Central Coast; I got to see some amazing launches while we lived there. I had hoped to see a shuttle launch when I first moved there, but we all know what happened to that project. Bah. posted by

madkow2747: As far as the day of a launch, it is well publicized. As for the time, sometimes you are only given a general time frame, especially for classified launches. As for me, a former employee on the base, I have connections and can get that information. Generally, there are common viewing areas and security forces are available providing updated launch time and countdown information. I hope that answers your question. posted by

Thanks everyone for the compliments. Out 94 pics in 3.5 minutes, these two were my best. It not easy and has taken me a while to get the technique. And a lot of time it’s just luck. I noticed on the news this evening, the videographer didn’t do it right. BTW: I was 4.3 miles from the launch pad. posted by

Hey Job, that's a pretty amazing picture for 4.3 miles away! After some simple calculations I'm guessing you had at least a 1,000mm lens, or did you use a telescope? I'd like to hear more about your camera setup. posted by
