We Need To Get Out!

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in Iraq, here is a sobering statistic:

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,867 deaths. That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq .

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington.

This same article was posted here before, about a year ago, taken from a fwd someone got in an email..  The death rate in Washington D.C. as being 80.6 per 100,000 was statistically proved wrong...  so the blog slowly died.

However, I would like to say that for a 5 year war, Iraq has taken a record low American lives.  Although, I was against this STUPID war from the beginning and I still am.   Not one American life was worth this war and the damage of starting this ridiculous war will hurt America in many ways for many years to come.

Yeah, totally bogus factoids depending on the credulity of the reader while displaying the callousness of the poster toward american servicemen and Iraqis.

The 80.6 number is bogus (the actual number is about 40 - horrendous still, to be sure), but even if it weren't, Joty, do you really hold the deaths of the servicemen and women in no higher regard than the deaths of gang-bangers on the streets of DC?  And do you notice that you count "both sides" of those gang-banger wars to produce the DC number while ignoring the deaths of those in Iraq who are not US servicemen?

Have no doubt that for a real person in Iraq - just as it would be for the Americans who move among the country only with armored cars and overwhelming fire power - Washington DC would be a paradise.

This is beyond obvious, what is your point in repeating this dated email chatter anyway?  You do know that over 4000 Americans have been killed over there don't you?  Its been all over the news.

Soupwater - why don't you take a chill pill and develop a sense of humor if that's humanly possible. It was not sent to me as fact, nor did I blog it as fact. Did you even read the effn punch line?

And I'd like you to tell my 6'8" 300# son who served three terms in Iraq (was headed for his 4th when he shattered his ankle in a motorcycle accident) just how callous his mother is...

Get over yourself, you pompous arse.

Sparks, you kinda took me aback as well. I didn't post it as an "article" - it was a tongue in cheek joke - geez!!!!!

I read the punch-line, I just didn't think it was funny.

The reason I didn't think it was funny it was because its intent was to belittle the seriousness of the war.  The "humor", such as it was, depends on the audience equating deaths due to street crime with war casualties, and that those servicemen would have been in as much danger in Washington DC as in Iraq - which is silly, as I'm sure your son would agree, in-nation accident or not.

I did realize you were repeating it - when I said "poster" I didn't mean you, I meant the original writer of the joke.  Sorry about that.

Sorry Joty...  I'm sensitive when it comes to one of the biggest mistakes America has ever made.

&*^*%%(%$(&)(&*_)   lol    I was not reacting to you my friend, I know where you stand.(smile)   I was only reacting to the joke.
