LoriMorales - > -> Weapons to Pakistan
Weapons to Pakistan

Two pieces of information I read in Time Magazine and heard on CNN news.

1)  In 1995 we suupplied $8.1 Billion in weapons to developing countries such as Pakistan and Kuwait.  This represents 46% of the worldwide weapons total. Time Magazine

2)  We give the Pakistan military $8 Billion a year to support their military.  CNN news

Those are not typos.  That is Billion with a big fat B.  Our foreign policies are just flat out crazy.  We could win the "hearts and minds" of people if we gave them food.  And, ten years from now, they wouldn't be able to kill us with the left overs.  Many, many thousands of the weapons currently used against our soldiers in Iraq were provided by ... that's right ... US of A.

Who says we learn from our mistakes?  Apparently this little saying is just one of those things from the distant past.

And I suppose you think that Fox News is the fairest media outlet in existence...

The US pays Pakistan more like $1 billion to support counterterrorism operations. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp...

The US dominates arms sales to third world countries. http://www.commondreams.org... The US DID supply the Afghan Mujahedeen with AK-47's, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and other weapons during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan during the '80s.

My question to everyone is simple. What's new about the US giving money, weapons, and or militery training to other countries? It sure is not a Bush invention by far. The fact is that the US has done this just like most countries have since whale before the US was even born. If it wasn't for other countries during the revolution we would still be under Brittish rule.

Nothing wrong with supporting counterterrorism efforts, I just was clearing up the fact that the US spends closer to $1 billion on supporting the Pakistani military, not $8 billion.

Eight billion annually.  That's each year for the last five years.  Our weapons programs to the masses have bitten us BAD.  It does not provide good will.  It provides dictators with the means to kill their own people and their neighbors - and then us.  It does not provide us counter-terrorism .... think, think, think about it.  We propped up Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kurdistan, China, the Philippines, Columbia, and a bunch of places in South Africa.  The majority of these countries are not our friends and certainly do not provide GOOD intelligence about terrorism .... good grief .... you can't be referring to that intelligence we received about Iraq having WMD.  They gave us data they knew was incorrect because it was in their best interest to get Bushie's panties in a bunch.  Our enemies knew that dumb cowboy would be off and running, itching to be our "war president."

My point, and I'll stick by it, is that buying friends with weapons is dumb, dumb, dumb.  It was dumb in the past and has caused deaths to our military.  It is just as dumb today.  Sit back and watch Pakistan turn into our enemy.  We'll all have to stay in touch via this link - but, I give it maybe 2 years.  Wish I was a betting person - this is a sure thing.

Aero, our differences are great, but I know you're a smart guy.  We propped up the Shaw in Iran and gave him weapons in his war against Iraq.  Then we gave weapons to Iraq in their war against Iran.  Now we're giving weapons to Pakistan because .... I don't even know why.  Who do they need them to kill?

And I repeat it.  If we gave these nations food and electricity and an education - it would be so much better all the way around.

Beware the military complex --- they are running your life.  Personally, I don't like it.  With good reason.  If you go to a surgeon because your big toe hurts, he will want to cut it off.  That is what he knows best.  If you go to the military to solve a problem, they will shot big guns and give others big guns to help you shot even more people and things.  Sometimes, a little salve on the sore big toe is all you need.

There is one thing that many may not understand about the weapons, palnes, and tanks we sell to our friends. They might have the same basic like and feel but lack the higher end technologies than the one our militery uses. They get the striped down model  with a few bells and whistles where we get the whole lot.

Lori, I understand your point and will say that the US as been shot in the foot a number of times by selling to our friends. One example is Bin Liden during the Russian-Afgan War. We supported him because he was fighting our common enemy and it at the time help the US. Now we are at war with him. History if full of most countries doing the same thing under the term of, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".

The funny and sad part of it all is that if we never made deals with other countries we probably would be having this discussion. Like I said the history of the world is full of arms deals to better position the power of ones country since whale before the US was created.
