odd/strange irrational fears
I HATE needles. The very thought of it makes my stomach turn and makes me light headed. I'll cry and pass out, usually in that order. I can see children laughing, playing, gettiing thier needles like a champ - but it doesn't at all diminsh the severity of my fear of needles. I think it is all psychological from this strange coincidence: When I was about 6 my black lab was hit by a snowplow on Christmas day. My father passed out. My mother was on the phone desperately looking for a vet. Long story short, they left and came home without my dog. They explained this to me by saying 'They gave her a needle and put her to sleep'. A few months later my mum was very ill in the hospital. I was visiting with her when the nurse came in and said okay you have to go now. I didn't want to leave. I asked the nurse why and she replied 'We're going to give your mummy a needle so she can sleep" Imagine my suprise!! I was certain they had killed my mother until the next visit I had. Do you have any odd/strange irrational fears? 10 comments from 5 users

I'm afraid of heights and oh my - flying. Those huge planes should not be able to float thru the air. As a private pilot, my husband wondered one day, "what is it, exactly, you are afraid of?" My reply, which in my opinion was soaked in pure logic was, "I don't like taking off because if something goes wrong you are too close to the ground to recover and you'll crash and die. I don't like flying over land because, don't ya know, ole tara firma is very hard and should you crash, you're gonna die. I don't flying over mountains because there are air drafts that will cause turbulence, which is very scary and if the pilot loses control you will crash in the mountains, die and no one will find you for weeks or maybe even months. I don't like flying over water because you have twice as far to fall and of course die - understand that? You fall to the surface of the water and then you fall again to the bottom of the water. Very scary." Dear husband replies, "you didn't mention landing. Are you afraid of landing?" Now - I read all the statistics because we get the publication from the agency that investigates airplane accidents (NTCB???), so I know that landing is supposedly the most dangerous part of flying. But, no- that doesn't scare me because we are getting closer to our destination, land and I can get off that terrible death trap! He laughs. And I will pass out in an elevator that is going up enough stories (80 or 90) to give my body enough time for my throat to close and my entire body to break out in hives. I get a great workout when we come to situations where high buildings with elevators are involved. I have to take the stairs. Fabulous thighs because of this fear. Not so bad. posted by

Smokey- that's very sad about your dog, but that story really is hilarious! Lori- how funny, I happen to love what you're afraid of! But I do admit that I'm a little afraid of flying over water. Don't like taking off at LAX. But in general, take off is the best!!!!! My husband and I are hoping to get our pilot licenses some day! posted by

And I can't sleep in a room that has the closet door open, unless it's wide open. Not if it's open just a crack or a few inches. posted by

Me too with the closet door!! If the door is open, there better be a light on inside the closet. And I cannot sleep with my feet uncovered. That damn monster under the bed loves toes so I have to at least have a sheet over my feetsies... posted by

Anything dead. I don't know where this fear came from, but I tend to freak if I see anything DEAD. I threw an absolute fit in biology when it came time to dissect the frog... not because of what it might look like inside, but because I would have to touch something dead. I was not a happy camper when hubby had to set mouse traps in the garage.... if I had seen one of the little buggars dead in the trap I would probably would have passed out. I wish I knew why it was so disturbing to me! My grandma had an open casket funeral in October... it about killed me too... and now Grandpa has the ashes in his house... oh Lord, help me! posted by

I also forgot about swimming in the middle of a lake no matter how clear the water is if I can't see the bottom. I'm afraid of being sucked under the boat or something unknown from the deep coming up to munch on my legs. Just thinking about it gives me the shivers. And large groups of birds. That movie scared the crap out of me! My son was not quite two when Jaws came out. I was young and dumb (22), it didn't occur to me that it might not be a good idea for him to see this flick. Anyway, he seemed fine. Two weeks later we went camping at Lake San Antonio. I decided to go for a dip, grabbed up my son and headed for the water. He stiffened up in my arms and screamed, "NO! Shark in water mom! Shark in water!" Oh my god I felt so awful. He's now 34 and doesn't swim... posted by

You (wo)men and "little girlies!!" TeeHee I used to be afraid, at night, of open closets, doors to the outside, and windows. Someone could come and get me - or my loved ones. This was true until my daughter became a young adult. As a child, when I went to bed, I would take a running start and jump into bed from half way across the room - something horrible lives under every bed. To this day, I have a little trouble standing next to the bed after dark. But odd enough, I sleep with my feet outside the covers. This is mainly because my feet run about 15 degrees warmer than any other part of my body. Certainly not afraid of "under bed monster" regarding my toes because, you see, they pull you under from your LEGS. Used to be afraid of spiders, big time. Kinda got over that when I started gardening. Grasshoppers (or is it crickets?) are good luck if you find one in the house. But - I don't want any kind of bug jumping at me. And, Joty, I am a very good swimmer, but you have it absolutely correct. If you can't see the bottom, you are just asking for trouble. And weebles - cockroaches are disgusting. That is not irrational!
