Grand Jury investigation to vulgar email
I read with interest the letter to the editor regarding the City Council's request for a Grand Jury investigation to the email sent to numerous people around town. You know, normally I would agree that far too much attention has been paid to this matter. I would agree that if it had been a "frustrated citizen" who felt ignored by the city council that it should be treated like a 'sticks and stones' situation. But, I read the email in full. I don't think that anyone who has not read this email can fully understand the implications of it's content. I'm sure any psychiatrist who read it would have a field day analyzing the kind of mind which would be capable of concocting such craziness. If I had been the recipient or the subject of this evil thing, I would be contacting the local police and asking for protection. The fact that this thing appears to have originated on the computer of one of our elected officials boggles the mind. No, sorry, this is not a "Let's move on ,OK?" thing. This is a "we need to find out who sent this thing" thing. I'm sure Beckham would like nothing more than to have people forget about it. Well, it ain't gonna happen. The email is sick and vile and needs the full attention of an investigation. 40 comments from 10 users

Who has said that too much attention has been paid to this matter?? Threatening emails are no joke. Threatening to burn someones House down is no joke. I think that the city council asking the grand jury to look into the threatening email is the right thing to do. I hope that the perp is unmasked. posted by

Devils Advocate strikes again. Why are you so angry about everything? Apparently you haven't been paying much attention to the issue because excerpts were printed here and there and I think even YOU would have to agree as to their derogatory and disgusting nature.

"Sainted Councilmembers" LOL, what is that suppose to mean? Are these emails suppose to be taken lightly PD? If I were a public figure and received such hate mail, I'd be nervous and hoping that who ever was behind it would be found out and named publicly...that might cool their jets. I cannot imagine an adult sitting at a computer sending out threatening email to anyone. Any adult. What is going on in their mind to do something like that? posted by

GregL, when I started blogging, this situation had just started, & I figured it wasn't my business, so, I really didn't pay much att., plus it was confusing. Although... I've always wondered, why it was sent? I just recall, someone was (maybe), blogging under different names? Am I just too confused? posted by

Greg, why do you always question my attitude instead of answering my questions? How can I possibly "agree as to ...derogatory and disgusting nature" of something I have not read? Oliva, the phrase "sainted councilmembers" was meant to draw attention to the fact that election to city office does not elevate one from criticism - even (or especially) poorly chosen criticism. What Grimes, Hand, and the others have done is release snippets and excerpts from these emails, loudly and obviously accused one of their own of sending them, and then asked us to be shocked, appalled, and in response to their outrage over letters we have not even seen, join with them in destroying their political opposition. This is what I oppose. Is it unreasonable for me to ask to examine what I am being asked to condemn? posted by

Oh man Lori, it's deep and complicated. The multiple profile BS was rampant for awhile, but it's calmed down considerably lately. But the e-mail thing in a nutshell is this. There were several crude, vulgar, disparaging, and threatening e-mails sent to a number of people in town, public officials and members of the paper as well, and who knows who else. People were called names, threats were made to burn down houses, that kind of thing. The person sending the e-mails tried to make it appear that the e-mails were sent by someone else, a local firefighter. The firefighter has been cleared by the police as NOT being the person who sent the e-mails. I believe the police have concluded publicly that the e-mails were sent from a computer belonging to a city council member. The council member denies sending the e-mails. It is rumored around here that the same person sending the e-mails was also blogging under multiple profiles. Wheeeeew, that's the jist of it. Interestingly enough, about the time the e-mail BS went to the authorities is about the same time the multiple profile blogging seemed to stop. Hmmmmmm. posted by

No, PD, it's not unreasonable to ask to see the e-mails. What is unreasonable is your constant snotty sarcasm. You love to argue for the sake or arguing. JUST ADMIT IT! posted by

thanks, GregL, that was patient of you to reply. Actually that's kind of what I thought, you just confirmed that w/out all the facts or story it's hard to put it in perspective.Hey, the Fire Man doesn't blog anymore either, huh? Can you blame him. It's next to impossible to defend your self to that extent, on a blog. posted by

I would like to see this resolved as well, but to be honest I wouldn't mind this going on the back burner for a bit if it meant the depot mystery was to get resolved first. To many unanswered questions these days! I have to say though that it is a bit annoying that bloggers keep popping up claiming to have read the emails. Yes, snippets have been posted here, but we've never read all of it/them. Where are these "bloggers" getting this info from? posted by

GregL, I never take a position opposite to that of my conviction, not for the "sake of arguing", or for any other reason. What a personally offensive charge you have made against me. And why, and when, and by whose authority did the use of sarcasm become "unreasonable"? Satire has been used to describe political developments since at least the Classical Greek playwrights. Please keep us informed of current and future restrictions on any other heretofore accepted and long-standing conversational forms. posted by

I was going to respond with some snotty sarcasm of my own, but it's late I'm tired and it's just plain unnecessary. You're right PD, I apologize for my remarks. Good night.
