fire equipment
I read that Tehachapi donated equipment from the defunct fire department to Bakersfield College. I heard that some things were donated to a city in Mexico. My question is: why didn't the equipment get donated to Sand Canyon Fire? Wouldn't that have made more sense than sending it so far afield? Those folk out in Sand Canyon have not been treated very well by County Fire. They pass a hat and sell home-baked goods to raise money for equipment. They could have really used the Tehachapi stuff and it would have stayed local. The citizens of Tehachapi paid for it; it shouldn't have been sent off like that. By the way, who is paying for the shipping charges to Mexico? The citizens, again?

The Sand Cyn guys are being treated very well by the County. I personally have gotten them their own helicopter dip site for their area. They will maintain it and run it during a fire. As soon as fire season is over I will help out on some training for that dip site. Also just today they where allowed to help out on a fire near Sand Cyn. You are 100% right, that equipment needed to stay in or near the city. There are many local groups that could have used this stuff. Sand Cyn, CERT, SAR and so on. The City of Tehachapi is after just one thing. That's to make sure the County Fire Department fails at it's new contract and to make sure that their friends and family members have a city job. Once SCVFD get up to speed with training and manpower I am sure the County will "Treat them better" The equipment should have stayed in town. Why is Bakersfield City Fire trucks in town all the time?

If history has reversed itself and KCFD is now working with SCVFD, then more power to you. Up to a couple years ago the Sand Canyon folk were practically shunned by the County. The mentality was that the County didn't want to spend much on covering that area, but neither did they want a bunch of "vollys" showing them up.It's good to hear you have a different attitude, Shane. Anonymous: did you mean to say "owes much to KCFD" instead of "BCFD"? If so, I say the Tehachapi Chief owes his life to KCFD. I have twice monitored a fire scene in which the TFD Chief had to be removed from harms way by KCFD. When my son was 13 he had more fireground knowledge than the (then new) Chief.

I don't think KCFD is afraid of anyone showing them up. They are known to be the best around. I think it was more of them being afraid of someone getting hurt.
