I am compelled to comment on recent Letters to the Editor. I will paraphrase each point and then respond. Financial solvency must be a top issue. If the hospital district cannot meet its financial obligations, such as payroll, then it will be forced to close its doors. Point 2. the Board should approve the contract offer made by GEMCare
The HMO contract issue hinges solely on covering expenses. The hospital district cannot make deals with HMO’s that do not cover the costs to provide the service. The money coming in must at least match the money going out. Point 3. the hospital should run like the fire department
The fire department is wholly funded by tax money. The hospital receives a minuscule portion of property tax for operational expenses: 0.002180 per $1000 assessed value. The Measure J Bond money must only be used to put up the new hospital; not a penny goes towards running the hospital. Point 4. Mr Hino and the Board are going in the wrong direction
Mr Hino took a healthcare district that was within days of closing down and turned it around, within a few short years, to a district that not only pays for itself but is expanding to a larger campus and adding many new services in a new building. Under Mr Hino and the Board’s coordinated direction, our hospital has not only stayed afloat on its own merits but has been able to pay down most of the debts incurred by the previous administration’s errors. The fact that we have a hospital that is not only functioning, but is growing, during a time when so many small hospitals are forced to close their doors, is due to the vision and hard work of this CEO, his administrative team, and this Board of Directors. Point 5. the physician candidates don’t want to delay the new hospital
It’s nice to read they changed their minds from what they wrote in June. Point 6. our growing community needs specialists
I agree completely, and I am so glad we have an Obstetrician, a Cardiologist, and a General Surgeon who intend to relocate their practices into Tehachapi to coincide with the new hospital. Point 7. the Grant-funded ITA group bought a retinal scanner The scanner was purchased by TVHD money after TVHD Board approval in November 2005.
