Bit of history: Dred Scott Decision by the U. S. Supreme Court (1856) said that no one descended from black Africans could ever become U. S. citizens. Soon after was a nasty time known as the Civil War. After the dust settled, three Amendments to the Constitution were passed: XIII, XIV, XV. 13th Amendment says slavery will not exist within the United States. 14th Amendment says, among other things, all persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens. 15th Amendment says citizens have the right to vote no matter their color or race. The reason for the 14th Amendment is now moot. It should be either rescinded or modified to say that anyone born to a U. S. citizen, even a naturalized citizen, is a U. S. citizen. posted by

"Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. " The phrase "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof " indicates that there are some exceptions to the universal rule that birth on U.S. soil automatically grants citizenship. The following persons born in the United States are not considered "subject to the jurisdiction [of the United States]", and thus do not qualify for automatic citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment: Children born to foreign diplomats; Children born to enemy forces in hostile occupation of the United States; Children born to Native Americans who are members of tribes not taxed (these were later given full citizenship by the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924). The following persons born in the United States are explicitly citizens: Children born to US citizens; Children born to aliens who are lawfully inside the United States (resident or visitor), with the intention of amicably interacting with its people and obeying its laws. Only modern PC interpretation has included "Children born to aliens who are NOT lawfully inside the United States, but here illegally"Then..... They should outlaw dual citizenship, you are either a citizen of one country or the other. Wawa...over countless centuries nations have been conquered, and to the conqueror goes the spoils. It may not be right, but it happened, and we can't go back and change it. Your argument doesn't hold water when it comes to the current day situation with illegals. posted by

Changing the U.S. constitution to meet radical needs, good luck. When that language in the constitution was set up it was for all peoples not just one group or another. The Constitution was written to benefit all who were born on the shores of America. Just realize that these peoples are among the fabric of American society and get along. This will not change and Gonzales will be more common than Smith. My grandfather came here from Mexico in 1910 back then they didn't call it illegal they called it "bring me your poor, your tired, your masses longing to be free" how far we have gotten away from those idealistic dreams. He came here thrived and me the son of an "Anchor baby" sits on more land and wealth than i dear to say most of you, God I love America and America has loved our family back. I think that most Americans are just afraid to compete with hard working peoples. If they are in your area of employment work harder and yes learn Spanish to compete. Most of all love your fellow HUMAN BEING no matter where he or she comes from. Today I seen a young Mexican man sitting nicely dressed in Denny's waiting for a job interview. The manager came out and said "hablar engles" he said no in an embarrassed way and the manager said well lets go interview. Right then I thought where are all these other American people who want this job they could be sitting right here beside this man, but the seat was empty.

This statement makes it sound like you're more concerned about whites losing their majority status than about the serious strain that the millions of illegals put on our economic, health, and social service infrastructure. I hope that's not the case. As for the birthright citizenship argument, the Supreme Court decided in the case United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898) that the Fourteenth Amendment grants citizenship to every child born in the United States, regardless of the citizenship status of the parents, with the exception of the children born to diplomats or to enemy forces in hostile occupation of the United States. posted by

To educate you Gube when the trumped up Mexican American war was over and America took over all of what was Mexico, (Arizona,California, New Mexico, Texas) a treaty was signed called the treaty of Guadalupe Heldago. This treaty stated that all peoples left in these areas by law would be able to forever use Spanish as a first language. As far as Mexico being a third world country you need to travel more open your eyes and educate yourself. Mexico City is the largest city in the world with a population of 30 million people thriving with an economy greater than California. If your talking about the other countries south of Mexico you would be right and in fact this is where most immigrants come from. Your attitude is the one that is sickening. Just keep shopping at the Grocery store and thank God your paying .99 a pound for produce rather than $3.00 a pound. At the very least you should thank the hard working people who allow you to sit on your lazy but and receive cheap food and products instead of hateful feelings. Stay mad Ill be happy knowing that one day you will wake up from your one point world view. Shoot people as they come over the border what love you display for your fellow human being. My grandfather refused to teach us Spanish and insisted we spoke English. Two generations later we are successful and my children know nothing of Spanish, however I am a thinking person and i want them to compete so I have hired tutors to teach them proper Spanish language. I just can not sit quietly and accept rumors and false truths in regards to "illegal immigration" it is scary to me that people in the land of the free are listening to this outright racism. One needs to ask the question of oneself "how does this affect me personally what does this cost me personally? Then direct those same questions towards the war in Iraq. Who's the real enemy of the people? believe me it is not workers in the field, hotels, restaurant's, gardens providing you cheap food, houses, and services. Love your neighbor no matter where from or what they look like and treat people as you would like to be treated. Walk a mile in a persons shoes who came here leaving family and home to work as a peasant walk just one mile because they have walked 1000 to come here. posted by

xcite, I'm not sure where you get your information about Mexico, but it is a third world country with a corrupt government all the way down to the police. Women are still treated like possessions. Drugs are a HUGE problem. If it were such a wonderful country, why are so many risking their lives to get out of there? I've traveled in Mexico, and no, not the beautiful touristy places. I drove through areas I was scared sh*tless. I drove through areas that made me sob with the poverty and the begging children. I've listened to the stories that my husband's crew in Las Vegas would tell about why they escaped and why they want their families out. These are hard working men that are here legally and do the hard physical labors that white boys whine about doing. And they aren't unskilled. I say welcome to my wonderful country, but please do it legally and learn the language. And teach it to your children before they enter the school system. awsmom, we may have once been a melting pot, but that has changed, we're more like tossed salad. and gube I agree - we don't need to learn Spanish!!! posted by

gube you're starting to sound like a neonazi, I agree we need to fix the problem of illegals and that they need to learn English, not the other way around, but you're just downright prejudiced against Mexicans, so why don't you go back to school where you belong, maybe you'll learn to use proper grammar and also learn to respect the other cultures in the melting pot (or "tossed salad") that is America. Once again, I am all for helping those in need and my wife and I certainly do, but NOT if they are here illegally, it's just that simple.
I will be watching Sen Runner and Mr. Antonovich very closely in their quest to bring some sensibility to the illegal immigration problem.
