Vacation Time!!!!
The kids and I are loading up the motorhome tomorrow and going to Red Rock Canyon for the 3 day weekend.  This was one of the suggestions  from you bloggers in my blog  "What is your favorite 3 day weekend trip?"  We have never been there before but are looking forward to it.  Anyone else going anywhere or doing anything?  Talk to you guys Monday and I'll let you know how it is.

Hey Olivia, have you ever been to a hot spring?  There is one call Tecopa Hot Springs near Baker.  Yes, it is a bit of a drive but I gotta tell you it is worth it.  I miss it terribly.  It's nothing real fancy, and the tubs are private.  They have little cabins or you can take an RV.  It is a very place for me.  There isn't much around so you have pack up your own supplies...food, etc.  The cabins have frigs, stove, kitchen supplies, coffee makers.  You are completely separated from society.  There are no phones, no tv.  Cell service doesn't even work very well.  The office has a phone and I there is a pay phone.  I know they were changing some things before I left, but I think it is still cozy.  The also have what the call "rooms" which is a one level building with multiple rooms...I think only 4 or 5.  Anyhow, I think they have a website.  I love it!!!  It is so peaceful and a great escape from the world.  Their number use to be (760) 852-4343

We are attending a family reunion over Thanksgiving Weekend up in Virginia City (ok, start humming the theme to Bonanza now). We booked a hotel that used to be a hospital and it comes complete with a ghostly nun...My family is so large that we filled the hotel and some of us had to find other accomodations :(   My husband and I don't leave our "girls" (a mini-Daucshund and a Chihuahua) so we are staying in pet friendly motel in Carson City.

We have to "dress the part" - cowboys, Indians, saloon girls, miners, etc anything from the wild west. We are looking forward to it though I dread the drive. T-day meal is catered so none of us will have to cook.

awsmom - I haven't been to Red Rock since my kids were in elementary school. I guess it couldn't have changed much. We enjoyed it, I remember that much. Have fun!

Olivia, our favorite weekend getaway is Santa Barbara.

We just got back from a trip.  We spent one day in Cambria, lounged around in Santa Barbara, and did some Christmas shopping in LA.  It was nice, but we were very glad to get back.  It was a little stressful traveling with a baby.  We had to time all of the driving time with his naps.  But the malls down there have little play areas that were wonderful for letting him get out of the stroller and crawl around.  Good trip, annoying people, excellent food!

The Cliff House is right beyond Ventura before Santa Barbara. It's a great getaway right on the beach. Tide pool next to it. Its not very fancy but the restaurant is great and the deluxe rooms have huge windows that overlook the water.  One of my favorites.

We had a wonderful time at Red Rock Canyon.  We went to the opal mine about 5 miles from Red Rock and spent a day with little rock hammers looking for opals.  Found a few but not gem quality but it was still fun.  Then we went to an area outside Red Rock and picked up jasper and  aggette (sp?) and quartz.  Kids hiked all over,  and went on a few 4 wheel drive roads.   On Sat nite there was a Star Gazing party at the visitors center with several high power telescopes set up to look at comets and stars.  One of the best parts is it is less than an hr from Tehachapi so it didn't cost an arm and a leg for gas.  The pit toilets were unique-- they had 4 walls but NO ROOF-you could star gaze and tinkle at the same time!  Thanks goodness I have a motor home and didn't have to use them!

Sounds like a lot of fun! I used to love collecting interesting rocks when I was a kid. When I was about 10, my parents got me a small rock polishing machine for Xmas & some of the rocks I collected came out really cool! It was just so difficult for a 10 yr old to wait the four weeks needed to go through the various grits to polish the stones. And the machine made quite a racket! But it was one of the best gifts I remember getting at that age.

Yeah, I was a real tom-boy when I was a girl.

Oh, back on topic. We don't take a lot of 3 day vacations. I like to save up my vacation time & go someplace far away every year. I guess we go out to the Santa Maria area a couple of times a year, but that's usually a day trip to visit relatives. I don't know if I could handle them for longer than that!
