Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I see a problem.....

I have read some of Gube Nation's and others rant and rave about legal and illegal aliens but have not really joined in the discussions.  Most people who come  across the border from Mexico are here  for one reason...A Better Life.   There is no middle class in Mexico and they come here seeking employment and the American Dream:  Work Hard and You will be Rewarded, something not available down south. Even my 8th grade son has not figured this out yet.  I admire their courage--coming into a country( some legally, most not) where they don't know the language and customs, and try to set up roots.  They do contribute to society--unclaimed withholding taxes, culture and of course, the Food!  But I am starting to shift my opinions and view because of a descion by TUSD.

Busing has been available to summer school students in the past.   Yes, I do realize there has been massive budget cuts from the state to education and the price of gas has risen dramatically.  I don't mind paying for the bus for summer school as I have shelled out several hundred already for my kids to ride the bus to school during the school year.  But this summer busing is going to be different.

TUSD has chosen to not offer buses to summer school students except Migrant Workers Children.  They will ride to summer school on TUSD Buses, while the rest of the students are not being offered transportation.

This leaves a bad taste in my mouth.....

That just seems wrong. I can completely understand why that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

So you're shifting your opinions and views on Mexican immigration, legal and illegal, just because of one stupid decision by the TUSD? That seems a bit ridiculous...

That's just stupid! It will cost the same amount to bus 20 kids on one bus as it will cost to bus a full load of 40 to 60. Although I don’t live in Tehachapi anymore, I’d be outraged.

Protest!

I suggest all you non migrant working parents with kids should show up at the bus stop the first day and demand your kids get on the bus. If they refuse, stand in front of the bus and block it.

Heck, if you guys decide to do it, I’ll drive 185 miles to support you. Not that it would matter much, but I’d be there.

Try sitting in a college classroom, where half of the students are struggling (and in some cases, failing) to pay for tuition & books, and the other half (children of migrant workers) are there completely free.  I don't mind helping migrant worker families, especially in obtaining an education, but they shouldn't have privileges that we are denied.

I'm not totally shifting my views, but I can now see what some people have been screaming about!

No doubt there is a federal or state program that reimburses TUSD for busing migrants, but not for busing others.  Add it to the price of your tomato, and tell yourself again why its important for Grimmway, Bolthouse, and WalMart to have cheap labor, and how globalization makes life better for everybody....

What do you wanna do, live in the past??

I have a problem with illegals period as they are breaking the law. I also feel it is a slap in the face of people like my grandfather who went throuh the system and came to this country. However the busing issue is more than just an immigration issue, it is a double standard and classism. If we are to truey be equal, then all students that are going to go to summer school should be allowed bus services.

RM6,

I agree with you that it is wrong to change your mind due to one issue, but look at most American and tell me that it is not true on all issues. Take your pick of any issue and you will see rights being removed slowly with many saying, "That doesn't matter to me, I don't use that service (or whatever it may be)." But once that right starts to affect them they start to change their mind. It is a matter of when the laws, rights, etc start to interfer with a person that it becomes an issue.

Did anyone see the story about the woman who was digging through the trash in Taft yesterday, took a bundle home and discovered it was a dead baby? She didn't call the police because "she didn't know how" (or is she here illegally?). I've always been ok with people coming to our country to better themselves as long as they do it through the correct channels and learn the language.

I don't have school age kids, but I like Job's idea...lol

Well, one thing came out of it is that now my son will not be attending summer school since there is not transportation, so I guess we can go camping more this summer!  But camping is not going to help him in math....

awsmom8 seems to be disconnected from the wider realities here.. can't say whether that disconnect stems from willing indifference or actual ignorance, but that doesn't excuse her not trying to educate herself on what should be more than well apparent.

First, let's clear up something. She states that Mexico doesn't have a middle class, that is a lie. Mexico has a large and thriving middle class, and that has come at the expense of the jobs of formerly middle class American citizens. The blue collar factory jobs that used to lift Americans out of poverty, and give them the opportunity to own a small home, and provide a better quality of life for their children. awsmom8 ought to actually research the facts, they are available online. Google them, Mexico brags about how it has a housing boom, large suburban housing developments, while it ridicules America for it's mortgage bust.

Outsourcing of American's jobs started in the '80s, but skyrocketed in the '90s after Bill Clinton helped the right wing push through NAFTA. The MSM talks about how NAFTA was bad for Mexico, and that is the reason so many illegal aliens from Mexico come here.. but the truth is that Mexico co-wrote the trade deal along with Canada and the US. What has been bad is the fact that Mexico's government has tried to avoid keeping it's promises to raise wages and enact reforms. The MSM never reports on how those Americans whose jobs were taken away, have never been given help, no jobs came to replace those that were lost.

If you go anywhere in the US where those factories left, you see devastated communities, where citizens have tried hard to find work, but the pitifully lower wages haven't been able to pay for mortgages or sustain any semblance of life. No social programs came in to make up the difference after the government destroyed those citizens lives. There hasn't been hunger and starvation in Mexico, while wages have been lower, so has the cost of living. The costs are dramatically less for everything. Those who seek to come here do so because they want the higher wages Americans earn, so they can send the money back to Mexico so they can be rich. They are aided by corrupt politicians and the illegal alien lobby in getting welfare and other benefits to subsidize their living expenses.

Americans pushed into the street when jobs are taken from them, no special help to make up for this, yet illegals break our laws, and the citizens are forced to subsidize them when they take away many of the American jobs that couldn't be outsourced.

Mexico is the 14th wealthiest country in the world, aside from a large and thriving middle class, it has many billionaires and millionaires. A tax base that could afford to do more for it's people. What's more, the lie that Mexico's corn farmers can't compete against cheaper US corn is a farce. The price of corn has skyrocketed because of biofuels. Mexican corn farmers are getting rich. Does awsmom8 ever think beyond the cheap lies she prefers to swallow?

Why is it that elites like awmom8 can understand their need for income, and rationalize illegal aliens coming here for the mythological "better quality of life". Mexicans have the ability to demand higher wages and better opportunities in their own countries. Mexico isn't the third world. Americans in the last century protested and ultimately gained better wages and opportunities, no one handed anything to them.

The point is to discourage illegal aliens continuing to come to the US, it's called tough love. The American people have already sacrificed enough to help those south of the border. We have a massive debt and a declining pool of jobs. It is immoral, the mind set of those who rationalized slavery hundreds of years ago, to support the discrimination against American citizens in the workplace, the erosion of our wage and workplace protections through the use of illegal alien labor. What's more it only serves to rationalize the status quo illegals claim to be escaping. We as a nation would be happy to stand with those people demanding their home countries raise wages and increase opportunities for their own people.. after all, Mexico's strong and wealthy economy can afford to tax it's people to help their own poor.

Is my question that simple and that complex:  Why can't all the kids, who are attending Summer School, be allowed on the bus?  I am surprised more parents are not outraged/annoyed by this ridiculous "rule" . . .

posted by robertcarter on May 28, 2008 at 05:13 PM

Huh?  Why is one kid charged to ride the bus and another one not?  Brake it down for the elderly.  Why would one group be shown favorism over another?

posted by swilli on May 28, 2008 at 07:42 PM

Your efforts to improve your child's math skills are admirable.  Those summer months away from the classroom can do a lot of erasing of lessons previously learned.  Ever thought of doing some home schooling during that time?  I bet the local library or the internet has some materials available to help you with that.  You could even take it with you while camping. What a great example you will set for your family by finding a workable solution to the situation.

Swilli, good, creative ideas.

However, the question still remains:  Get on the bus, Gus; why is one, specific group so privileged, while the others are discriminated against?

Have any of you called the school board? Seems like you would get the answers you are looking for from them instead of commenting on this blog.

Here is the link to TUSD for their phone numbers and email. http://www.teh.k12.ca.us/in...
