Help This Amish Mother!

Alright, I will admit it.  I am not very "technogical advanced."  And my children call me the Amish mother as I have to ask them for help on computer games and occassionally even my cell phone.  I don't even know how to text, and if someone sends me one it takes me 10 min. to figure out how to get to that feature on my cell phone.

That being said, I need to get my car outfitted to be able to talk on my cell phone.  I don't really want a pink tooth or blue tooth hanging off my ear or a mic bobbing in front of my mouth. I recall that 20 yrs ago the large animal vet I worked for had a mic above his visor and he could talk and hear on his cell phone without holding it up to his ear (cell phones at that time were bigger than home phones).   The only downfall was that everyone in the vehicle could hear his conversation--which I don't care about.  Any idea where I should go or what I should buy to get updated to the 20th century?

sorry awsmom  i can't help you because until I get caught and ticketed I'll be using my cell phone while driving.........Those blue tooth ear pieces look absolutely stupid..................I think people think that the ear piece makes them look important....they look stupid.....

I understand that radio shack and Costco have blue tooth visor whatchamacallits for a reasonable price.

I know they sell car kits for various phones on eBay, just type in your cell phone model in the search.  I have a loudspeaker feature on my phone, but I usually wear a headset that plugs into my phone.  I have two types, one that has a little thing that hooks over my ear with a boom microphone, and another with a little ear thing that fits inside my ear and has the microphone lower along the wire, like a little fat part of the wire (yes, since having kids everything is a "thingy" now - and my short-term memory is shot).  I got one of those bluetooth things for my other phone, but my husband ended up using it with his phone.  He hates those too, he won't wear it outside the car because he thinks they look stupid also.  I don't usually text, but I still have to have a full keyboard for entering appointments, reminders, grocery list, addresses, etc. and I will NOT hit the same key more than once to get a damn letter!  What a waste of time!  I guess I'm just getting old!   If you don't mind my asking, what phone model do you have?

I'm with Gube, I hate those earpieces too. I'd rather pull over and make a call than use them.

The easiest thing for you to do would be to call your cell phone provider. They should know exactly what type of phone you have and be able to guide you in the right direction. And then after they tell you exactly what you need, you can buy it from them or buy it online.

Years ago  I used to say that people that talked on cell phones in public were stupid and that I thought that they thought that they were important........Now I talk on cell phones in public...............Now I say the same thing about those stupid ear pieces but I know that one day I'll most likely have one sticking out of my ear..........until then they look stupid !

Let's face it, America has become slaves to their cell phones. Cells phones have turned us into a nation of rude, irritating people. I even attended a wedding where a cell rang in the middle of the ceremony.

Yes, I have one...and get yelled at by my family because I forget to carry it, or don't answer it - especially if I'm driving. I don't take it with me to movies, restaurants or weddings!

The Parrot's are nice, and interface with your car's stereo system:

Wal Mart sells about everything you need for your handsfree cell phone needs. Since I have a ton of Wal Mart stock, I always recommend Wal Mart for all your needs except music as they edit out the "F" word on their CD's LOL!!!!!

I have read the way the law is written and at one time there was talk that one could not use a "wired" headset. But the final law does not state that. Interestingly enough, the law also makes no mention of texting whilst driving. But that is neither here not there. But, dear Amish mom, perhaps the way to go for you would be with a good oldfashioned wired headset with a boom microphone. Or if you go with Bluetooth, I recommend the Plantronics Voyager 815.

Hey Gube I don't think I'm important just because I use a bluetooth, I like it because I don't get a kink in my neck, or drop my phone all the time like I use to,  and it just hooks behind my ear with out some little microphone shoved into my ear canal cause' those hurt. My husband thought blue tooth's were stupid too, but I just love mine and I was using it well before the law took effect. Come on Gube you know you want one.

I think thats pretty vain and silly that anyone would hesitate to wear a bluetooth earpiece "because it makes them look stupid".  Seriously, who the heck is going to see you in your car long enough to notice you are wearing one?  And if they are looking at you that hard, you are either really cute and should be flattered or maybe you need to rethink what you decided to wear that day. ;)  My wife just bought one and you can't even tell she is wearing it.  I think hers is a Plantronics.  She has long hair though so you can't even see her ears nevermind the headset.  Just because you have one doesn't mean you need to wear it outside your car...

By the way, if you DO decide to get one, don't skimp and get the cheapy $20 ones.  They really don't work well at all and no one can hear you.  We went through a few before my wife finally found THE one.

I fortunately don't have to drive hardly at all so I haven't had to deal with any of this yet. :)  But if/when I do I'll be getting the one my wife has.  Its way better than the others.

Oh gosh, thanks for the humor, I needed it this morning. You know, it used to be if you saw someone walking down the street or driving in their car talking to themselves, you would be calling the "men in the white coats to come and take them away hahaheehee..." What a world, what a world LOL
