Summer too soon in stores
I was just at K-mart in search of some "winter items" in preparation for the snow tomorrow. There was nothing to be found, other than pool noodles, Easter baskets, and flip flops. It is still February!!!! I know stores need to prepare for  future seasons, but in that planning it seems they may have forgotten that we are in the mountains.
Has anyone else found this frusturating?

I agree! I'm still knee-deep in my winter coat and no where near ready for swimsuit season yet. Stores are making it harder and harder to live in the moment.

I have noticed all the big chain stores set stuff out earlier and earlier I guess they are trying to compete with each other... but geese who wants to even think of summer when you are all bundled up in winter clothes! Same goes for summer items; I hate trying on sweaters on in August I want to buy cloths and wear them now... not in 6 months. Come on retail managers get a clue!

Sometimes I feel like stores increse the amount of pressure I feel to go, go, go and never enjoy the moment. They are always hurtling towards the next sales opportunity, pushing us to the next holiday without a breath in between. They put up Valentine's stuff the day after New Year's Day and now are all busy pushing Easter, even though it isn't coming until April.

Myself, I'd like a "live in the moment" sale, where they feature stuff I can use this weekend :o)

Right on, I really get frustrated with  this 3-4 months ahead of time retail schedule they have! Get real stores, this is Tehachapi, we have four seasons and winter that doesn't usually end until late March. We are supposed to have a snow storm next Tuesday. I was looking for some waterproof snow boots for my kid, and they have nadda, in the stores here.

On top of that, they are all pushing spring and planting, so  I foolishly seeded the lawn and planted a bunch of plants  last weekend that will all probably keel over next week! Ugh. Now I feel like an idiot.

Anybody out there have a plant saving tricks? I planted some bulbs mostly which should be fine, but I also planted flower seeds, and grass.

Christine - what is area's night temp been lately?  That's what you have to worry about.  You are right about the bulbs, they be fine.  Your flower seeds, if they are in a bed, cover them and don't water the day before if you think it will get below 30 or so.  But the problem is seeds need to be constantly damp for about three or four weeks.  Your grass, you might be SOL, but it will eventually come up,  just not when you want it to probably.  By the way, don't feel like an idiot or at least alone, I did the same thing last weekend...lol.  And we are still getting lows in the 20's here!!

Christine do not water your plants or lawn on Monday...  they should be fine.   If you look around spring growth has already began, grass, weeds and other plants are growing all around... This happens every year at this time, just as every year a few weeks later we get a dayum freeze right as the baby plants are trying to grow.  As usual most will survive the freeze.

Thanks for the tips gals! The temp has been getting about 30 degrees at night here, but I live in BV and they are saying snow on Tuesday at 3500 feet. What do I do if it rains on Monday then turns to snow overnight? I guess I am SOL if that happens. I did cover them with an extra layer of soil today. I could lay down some plastic over top, but then the plants that are already up there (perenials) would get squished. I could throw some straw over top, but then I have a big mess to clean up later, and I just cleaned out all the flower beds. I am a little tired of the snow, although I do love living here. I keep pulling out my hat and gloves after I have just put them away, thinking that winter was over. Guess not.
