Ditch digging wasn't my worst job
Digging ditches when I was younger was not that bad of a job. On another post Joty said that a ditch digger was just as important as a CEO. Well that got me thinking of how many ''bad'' or ''worst jobs that I have had over the years. When I was young I would take what ever job came my way. Here's a short list. Ditch Digger Cleaning Out House's was the worst job that I have ever had. I wonder I the person doing that job is also as important as a CEO. At the time I didn't think so. But today I have great respect for people that do crappy jobs. Some people would never lower themselves to do a crappy job and that's too bad. Having worked as a garbage man, ditch digger or as someone that pumps shit for a living it has taught me to appreciate what I have and were I am at today. Today I have a well paying job that required working 40 hours a week and going to school 2 nights a week, 4 hours a night for 5 years. Most of that 5 years that I went to school I worked in LA and went to school in Bakersfield. I was driving well over 300 miles a day on school nights. So what are some of your ''bad'' jobs and what was your worst job ever. 13 comments from 10 users

I don't think I've ever had a "bad" job, just incredibly boring ones. My husband once scooped doggy doo for other people just to get enough money to put food on the table. He too, is willing to do anything - well, was - getting older has slowed him way down. It all balances, if we didn't have the "bottom" - we couldn't have the "top". I watched a program on the History Channel the other night about worst jobs back in the "olde days". One of the jobs was the royal bum wiper, or the Groomsman of the Stool. His job, which was considered a "top" (go figure, wiping bottoms a top job) position and attracted aristocrats. Not just anyone could wipe the king's arse! Some of the other jobs were just horrifying...glad I'm a "modern" girl... posted by

I was a bartender in a club called Talk Of The Town in Lawton OK, while living in a dry town (Vernon Texas) when I was only 17 years old. I also got married in Vernon, anyway.... people brought in a bottle of booze with their name on it and I would mix it with non-alcoholic beverages. "Give me a Sparks on the rocks with a Dr. Pepper back please. lol posted by

I actually haven't had any real bad jobs. Some I might not have enjoyed a whole lot, but I've been fairly lucky. I used to work out at the Pegasus Foundation. For those of you who don't know it's a save heaven for rescued race horses and thoroughbreds. I think they take in horses regardless of breed now, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I bucked hay, cleaned stalls, cleaned wounds, helped give meds, etc. It was a pretty dirty job, but I love horses so I really didn't mind it. I also used to work at a call center for Budget Car Rentals. Let me tell ya there are some freaks out there who will use any ol' 800 number to fulfill their 900 number fix! Blahhhhhhhh! posted by

My worst ever job was working at Mervyns in Monterey. For me, nothing is worse than a customer service job. And they assigned me to work as a "credit rover" once, where I had to walk around trying to get people to sign up for their credit cards. Sorry, I think it's immoral to try to sap people into acquiring debt. So I just went around asking people if they needed help with anything, helped a lot of people find clothes or services they were looking for, and was never assigned that job again. Other bad job- I was a picker at a warehouse. That job was fine (boring, but ok), but there was one kind of picking they half-trained me on that was terrible. It was where you had these little boxes and you picked tiny items like thread or individual jars of paint. I don't know why I hated it so much, but it was horrible. I much preferred "slapping" or picking bulk items. Yeah, I had some muscles back then :) posted by

I worked one summer at a slaughter house when I was 16. I grew up hunting and fishing and thought it would be no big deal. I was very wrong. The smell of death was on me so bad that our family dog did not come near me for over 2 months. After college, I worked in Hazmat for years. I traveled the world and in doing so, I fell in love with food from around the world (I also met my wife while in China). When I got married I promised my wife I would stop doing Haz work and I did. But, the very last job that I did was not only super close to home but was also grim to say the least. Our neighbor (a 30 something male) at our apartment complex in Long Beach died in his apartment. About 3 days later, I could smell him rotting. I called the police as I knew that smell oh too well and I saw that his mail was backed up in the box. The police broke the door down and he was on the sofa. I won't get into details. I identified the body and as fate would have it, my company had the contract to clean up the apartment of all biohaz. The next day, I suited up with one other coworker and went in and cleaned up the body fluids that had released from his corpse. Had to cut the sofa up with a chain saw to be incinerated and the same goes for the carpet under the sofa. He was a nice young man. We lived next to him for 4 years. I never found out how he died. I have many haz stories that are pretty bad.

Whatever the title ot the task, the worst job has to be when you're really good at something and you really care about doing it well, but your bosses don't care about anything but making More Money! More Money! with absolutely no regard for providing customers with a professional, quality product. When an employer doesn't give you the tools and resources to do the best possible job, or a reasonable amount of compensation or even strokes for managing to pull it all off, no matter how hard you work, you'll always have nothing but too much stress and a mediocre product (at best) to show for your exhaustive efforts. When the honchos finally manage to suck the life from every last worker who hung in there anyway, the doors will finally close leaving a hole in the community they're supposed to be dedicated to serving. posted by
