I LOVE the new strip malls!
I have enjoyed driving along our improved downtown Tehachapi streets, as it's been so nice to see the new compass rose, brick, benches, lighting, and so much more! What beautiful work. I personally think it's all a positive thing for our city, the improvements...and these new strip malls/stores going up look so beautiful! I enjoy higher-end clothing & am glad to find it's here in my very own town now! (Vanity Flair). I am SOOOOO excited about the Starbucks about to open up as well! I LOVE my morning coffee, and I'll definitely cruise through the drive-thru daily for my caffeine fix. I'm anxious & happy for our pretty lil town!  ; )

I agree beauty. I couldn't see what everyone was complaining about when it came to the new Starbucks complex facing away from the street. Just look at all of the grass, the little train engines in the railing, etc. Obviously some of us have forgotten what big citites look like. There are tons of coner strip malls just like that one, facing away from the street, with no effort toward pleasing the eye. It's exciting to see the care and attention put into things like the lamp posts and compass rose. Old, dilapidated building are sight for sore eyes, and so are fields of weeds. Let a little grass come in, a complex or two. It isn't looking so bad so far.

This is not a big city nor do we want it to look like it. Just because big cities have done it that way does not make it right. I have nothing against growth or big stores, just do it right. We need to fix up the old and make sure the new looks good as well. I to like the new shops and can't wait till Starbucks opens, but if we build something new lets make it look 100%. I want Tehachapi to be pleasing to the eye.  We would not have gotten the  train railing or the grass if some of us didn't make a fuss. All the nice add on's were after the fact, as stated by the city and developer in a story posted by the news.

The "backwards building" as it is now known as, has a very bad parking lot design. It will have two drive threws coming together in the middle of what will be a very congested parking lot. Plus the one way in and one way out will be fun to deal with as well. I was hoping that the city would not have repeated the same issues as with the Save-Mart parking lot. I to want new stores in town, just not at the expense of our towns beauty. Why didn't they just face it the right way? Also do you guys really think that wall and 15 foot bank of dirt is going to go away for Wal-mart? I don't.

I would love to see a congested parking lot in Tehachapi...i long for Tehachapi traffic

So you like sitting in your car waiting because someone didn't do their job right and design a user friendly parking lot? If you long for Tehachapi traffic try pulling out onto 202 at 5:30 pm or drive up to Save Mart and find a parking spot!  I hope you were being sarcastic.

Yeah what 'canibeyou' just said. Best downtown Boise, ID. Nice small shops, nice old town area. People hang out downtown outside in 20 degree temps. Why ? because it's fun downtown. They have things to do downtown!

I couldn't agree with you more canibeyou!  I have to say I do like the little lights they put in downtown, but what good is fancy brick work in intersections and crosswalks if your roads still look like crap? Also, do they play music downtown everyday or only during holiday seasons?? Can we blare bagpipes for St. Patty's Day? J/k kinda. No seriously who controls the music to our lovely, expensive, audio system?

I also have to agree that we need more things for the kids in this town to do. The bowling alley was great, but the location was bad. There were people that lived here that didn't even know we had a bowling alley!! The pool hall was good, but the layout was bad. The miniature golf course at Boomer's in SS was a joke! The pool during the summer is awful too!  Sadly many of these places became teen drop off zones and hangouts. Vandalism and thefts were very common. What do you expect? It was the ONLY thing for kids to do( not that I'm saying what they did was OK). Lets get something where more than one person is having to watch 25+ kids, that isn't next to a bar(don't get me wrong I have seen bars in bowling alleys work if done properly), What about an indoor rink? Roller hockey anyone? I think a bowling alley would be tons of fun too!

Oh, and ENOUGH with the Mexican food!! Unless it's an El Polo Loco, then I'm good with it! :)

Can I just say that I love seeing people on here talking about what they think is needed in town. Someone, somewhere is going to read this and come in and give us  what we're looking for!

Hey...here's an idea sure to annoy. How about a spot that has an outside patio where people can grab a cup of coffee or a sandwich and sit outside with their dog? If you go to really cool downtown areas in places like Carmel, they offer it all of the time.

all you people do is gripe If you want to change things put up the money and do it.  Buy or rent the old bank building and open a coffee shop.  As a retailer store in tehachapi, it my money and I will do want and sell what I want.   Maybe If you work and take care of your home you will not have time to sit in coffee shops.   I do remember the indoor rink and the bowling alley When it cost more to keep it going then you take in who's going to make up the difference.  (YOU) and both were in good location at the time.  You want them spend your money and open them.  If you not happy hear move you move hear because you were unhappy before.  I been in town for 30 years.  and made this my home.  give it a chance.  In old days children . chores to do, not have parents buy every thing for them

With all due respect seniorcitizen, 30 years ago is not today.  Perhaps those businesses you mentioned didn't make it because  there were fewer people living in the area and they were mostly scraping by selling the homemade crafts they made at their kitchen tables, while their children were busy taking care of  their houses for them. (I bet they drank coffee while they went craft-crazy!)   BTW, child labor has since been outlawed.
It is only my opinion, but retailers who are not willing to listen to the needs and ideas of people who actually live and spend their $$$$ here NOW won't last another decade or three, let alone another few years.

Wow, senior --- who's griping? We're just talking about things we'd like to have here in town. It's not like we're asking for WalMarts or giant box stores to disturb the landscape. Quite the opposite. I look at things like this as a fun discussion where everyone has the chance to talk about what they'd like to see.

I think most of the people on here do work...that's why we are looking for fun places to spend our hard-earned money in our off time. And be able to spend it here, not driving down the hill to give it to someone else.
