calvintehachapi - > CITY COUNCIL FIASCO -> IS HOLLY HART SPEAKING FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD?
IS HOLLY HART SPEAKING FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD?

HOLLY HART-MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD

When Holly Hart spewed her unfounded and personal venom against Councilman Beckham at last Monday night’s standing room only City Council meeting, she was known to be and viewed to be a member of the local school board. The Mayor even publicly acknowledged her as such even though she did not so identify herself. As such, she could have been perceived as speaking for the school board. This is a travesty which cannot go unchallenged and I am sending a copy of this to the school board and ask for them to investigate bringing her up on charges and for her to issue a public apology to Mr. Beckham. They need to HEAR not only what she said, but how she said it. She even stated that she was ANGRY! About what? It had nothing whatever to do with her, or the school board but she was spouting off about what somebody else told her in a third hand conversation. But you don’t have to take my word for it, just go to City Hall and ask for a cd audio of the proceeding. YOU CAN'T UNRING A BELL! Is this the caliber of someone we want on our school board? In the last analysis, she should be asked to resign. RIGHT NOW!

I agree that Holly Hart is a terrible school board member and would never vote for her if she were to run again. Of all the members, my view is that she is the least qualified on the current school Board, and I totally disagree with her comments at the Council meeting (they were repugnant). However, that said, just because someone is an elected official does not mean they cannot vent all they want in the name of freedom of expression in a public forum (however, ill conceived). Now, IF she purported to represent the school district on some matter or on some position, that would be VERY wrong. I'm not sure she did that (she was just spewing nasty Holly Hartisms). Thanks for the opportunity to comment on this.

Thanks for you comment Active, but PERCEPTION is where it's at. A public official cannot divorce their government position from their own persona. They are perceived to be that same official. Holly Hart was terribly wrong to say what she did in a public forum. She had the ability to speak with Mr. Beckham in a private and personal setting on a one-on-one basis but she deliberately CHOSE to do this publicly. Now, she must suffer the consequences...and I sure hope she does!

This would be a lesson and wake up call for others who might entertain such ill conceived ideas. In my opinion, Mr. Beckham has a good case for Slander, Defamation of Character and Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress. But, it's up to him to file them and if I were in his shoes, I would file those charges against both Hart AND the School Board. (And maybe even the City of Tehachapi!)

Things have really heated up lately in Tehachapi on a number of issues. The opinions about the inadequacy of the local government, the crime rate, the way the city chooses to manage its city code enforcement, etc. I guess this type of activity has occured from time to time as long as I have lived in Tehachapi (since 1970). I have taken more of an interest in it lately so it gets my attention quicker.

I remember when wind turbines first started going up in the mountains around Tehachapi and a notable group of people were very opposed to them. There was an effort to get a moratorium to stop their progress. As anyone can see this did not work and wind turbines are now accepted as part of the landscape.

I remember when a man was shot outside of his home by the local law enforcement of that time in a "stand-off" situation, and he didn't have the type of weapon law enforcement thought he did though they were quick to react the way they did. This was one instance of many that have involved violence and death in Tehachapi over the years. Tehachapi is not "becoming" a violent place, it has always had a certain amount.

There has also been a long history of drug use in Tehachapi, this is nothing new. It stands to reason that with the increase in population there will be an increase in crime and violence, this is a statistical certainty. It may not be realistic to believe that this will somehow improve.

One thing that has changed is that we now have the ability to freely communicate online in forums such as this and share our thoughts and information. Instead of writing a letter to the editor and hoping that it might get published we can share our thoughts with each other almost instantly. People have been going to city council meetings and saying things that they may or may not regret for a long time now, but I really appreciate the fact that we can also express our views.

As long as we have a voice like this, it takes away some of the power of people who hold public offices because we are able to add information to the record that didn't exist before. Public officials can still rant, write citations, or do whatever, but we do not have to feel powerless because we have more of a voice than before. We can reach a lot of people.

I don't have a lot to say but I like being able to say something if I feel like it, and it seems like some of those in office would like everyone to sit back and just be quiet and let them handle things the way they would like to.

Business as usual I guess.

Blendonw this is one of the most rational and insightful posts that I have had the pleasure to read.  The freedom of speech is one of our country's most reveared and valued freedoms.  Thank you for reminding all of us.

I couldn't agree more, teresr!!

I remember when there were a lot of rational and insightful people who blogged here, even if our views were opposing, I always learned something. Especially patience and learning to not react with venomous words behind the anonymity of my computer screen.  That's all I have to say about that.

Keep posting Blendonw!

In peace,

Annette

Kudos to Holly Hart for speaking out.  This gal has guts.  I remember when Beckman used this very blog to bash other council members in order to get elected.  He even bashed the Tehachapi News.   It's one of the reasons I didn't want to vote for him. What goes around comes around I guess.

Kudos, are you kidding me?  Whether or not the accusations are true, a city council meeting is hardly the place to behave like a child (although it does seem like it happens more than one would like)!  If there are so many 'witnesses' to Stan's alleged actions it shouldn't be hard to prove and Ms. Hand could initiate action.  The only positive thing that Ms. Hart's childish outburst did was to galvanize everyone into definitely wanting to rid themselves of some of the incumbents.  And even if Ms. Hart was not representing herself as school official during her comments, it certainly made her look less than professional (to put it mildly).  If the allegations are true, then action should definitely be taken, but airing it out at the meeting was not the way to handle it.

Does it strike anyone as 'odd' that Hart stated, "Her friends had received the phone calls...", yet she wouldn't name them.  How would Beckham have known just to call Hart's friends?  Does he have a list of 'her friends' that he used?

Seems 'odd' to me that not one other person has backed up Hart and said they have received such a phone call.  Hart didn't say she received one.  Just her 'friends' received them.  This still smells like a fishy-bear tale to me.

Again, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. I don't like secrets; I want to know what is going on behind closed doors.  Being sneaky and making telephone calls to try and destroy someone else's life is much worse than being childish.   If Hart's accusations are true, I too think action should be taken, AND if she is wrong, action should be taken against her.   BUT how would we ever have known about these allegations if she did not speak out?  Should we suggest that Ms Hart start blogging her opinions here on blogs like Stan does?   Stan has deleted most of his previous posts, but I did find one that proves he commends Ms. Hart’s actions: ................................................. ................................................. ................................................. .  . Anonymous: Stan, I find it humorous that you complain about the paper, yet are making full use of its resources to publicize your campaign (isn't that against the rules??) --- and your other supporters also are bashing the paper, but use it everyday to express their opinions.

Seems hypocritical to me to bash something, but still use it for your own gain. Don't know if that's the kind of person I'd vote for.
. ................................................. ................................................. ................................................. ............... .   Anonymous, I'm glad you have a sense of humor.  And, Mimi, freedom of speech is what it's all about.  The First Amendment.

Hard nosed reporters are used to getting bashed and they take it on the chin, it comes with the job.  I don't think I've unduly bashed the paper.  I certainly haven't yelled loudly, or not at all as I recall, about the big chunk of money I paid for my newspaper ad to have it come out printed as badly as it was.  I am sure in Stefani's capable hands the next issue will be corrected.

All of you on these blogs are intelligent, informed and expressive people.  You are the citizens that see something right or see something wrong and take action to commend or condemn.  You are the bedrock upon which we can all build a great plan for the City of Tehachapi and build a city we can all be proud of.

Let's keep on track and let's get out the vote on November 7th!

Kindest regards,

Stan Beckham

This was not the place or time for Hart to do what she did. It makes her and Hand look bad. She spewed hearsay. She refused to back up anything she said with any names or evidence. It makes the Council look bad. It makes Hand look bad to have her friends do this. It makes Stan look bad due to the allegations. It makes Grimes look bad for not controlling the meeting. It makes Vernon and  Smith look clueless. However I bet Smith was loving that fact that Stan was getting beat up after Smiths lilac fiasco!  They all look like a bunch of punk kids in a school yard fight. They started with bringing in the friends to help, whats next? "My dad can beat up your dad."  I love going to meetings, it is like watching big brother or survivor!  It is just a matter of time the Police Chief will have to mace someone. I can't wait to see who gets it, or who gets to go to tribal council to get voted off.  People it's time to turn off your TV and go watch the real side show!

But this is the place and time to attack people who are not here to defend themselves? At least Hart said her piece to his face, instead of going to a website and saying awful things about people who aren't here. If it was as bad as you describe, why did you not get up and say something then and there?

Sparks I find it funny when you say Stan has deleted some of his blogs.  I printed everyone of them at the time and when I look under his profile all of his comments and posts are there.  When I review these, the fact of the matter is, when he was bashing the City Council and Jason Caudle he was right on point.  From what I have seen develop since that time, I have noted that he was rather circumspect in his bashing.

I will stand by my observations.  No one other than Holly Hart has made any statement that they have received such phone calls and until I see proof otherwise, I will take Stan's word over hers.  As for his not saying anything in his defense, he did ask Ms. Hart repeatedly, "...who her 'friends' were that were making the allegations?", and "Why weren't they at the meeting making the complaints?"  Stan kept his dignity and did not stoop to the level of Holly Hart.

If you are really interested, call the city clerk and ask for a copy of the CD's of the meeting.  There is no charge and they will have those ready for you.  But I think all you are really interested in is stirring the pot (no pun intended) and trying to discredit a good man who has done everything he can to serve the will of the majority of the citizens of Tehachapi since he has been elected.

OK, just to set the record straight here.....What are we trying to "prove" Stan did? Are you saying he's lying about Hand smoking illegal drugs or are we saying he's not fessing up about making some calls? What is it? So far I see people that only seem upset about his "supposed" phone calls, and not about the fact that these phone calls were supposedly made because an elected official was partaking in illegal activities.

Let's just say for arguments sake that this whole thing did happen. Who would be at fault? In my opinion someone partaking in illegal activities tops someone making a childish phone call.  Just my two cents.

*** FOR THE RECORD I'M NOT SAYING ANY OF THIS DID OR DID NOT TAKE PLACE!!! JUST DISCUSSING THE POSSIBILITY.***

justcurious- She could have done the same thing before or after the meeting. The only reason she did this during the meeting is to make it public. It it was ugly. What did this do for our City? What did it accomplish? Did the citizens of Tehachapi benefit from her rant?  Besides if someone got a call they should be the one at the meeting complaining. If Hand was told about the calls, she should have said something at the meeting. Why did Hart as a 3rd party to everything come in and say stuff she could not or was not able to back up? Was she held the the 2 minute time limit that Ed forces on everyone else? Don't get me wrong here I am not defending Stan, I am just arguing what Hand and Hart did as wrong! It showed poor judgement on Harts part and showed how petty Hand is.  It also show we need change ASAP!

Medicone - I realize that you must have an impossible schedule, but have you considered running for office?  And countygirl, you make a great point.  Which is the lesser of the two evils?  Making stupid, prankish phone calls or a Public Representative using illegal drugs?

I don't think we have any evidence that Deborah Hand is a drug user.  And, equally we don't have any evidence that Stan Beckham made the alleged phone calls.  That just leaves us with Holly Hart ranting like a lunatic and those actions beg the questions:

1.  Who else was involved?  Perhaps only Hand, or Hand and Smith, or Hand, Smith & Caudle; and, 2.  Was this a deliberate attempt by those involved to discredit Stan Beckham and thus tank the Capital Hills location for the new City Hall?

We all need to remain focused on the big picture and not let Holly Hart and friends derail the real topic here.
