A Touch of Class in Tehachapi
After a long day at our Birthday Bash pet charity fundraiser this past Saturday, my husband and I decided to stop into the new Wine & Cheese Cellar at The Orchard shopping center to check out the wine selection. We were rather bedraggled from a day of dog washing and high winds, so we were looking forward to finding a nice bottle of wine and heading home. No more than 5 feet in the door, we were warmly greeted by Doug and Mary Amos, the local owners, who very sweetly ignored our appearance, and invited us in for a glass of wine. Although expecting just a retail and gift store, we were delighted to walk into a beautifully-decorated Napa style wine tasting room and lounge, complete with relaxing jazz music. I was excited to see they also had a food menu that included things like Asian chicken salad, cheese plates, sandwiches, and Italian style pizza. I don't know where they were hiding the gourmet chef, but my salad was amazing (huge too!), and the gorgeous Napoleon desert that walked past made me drool. And, the best part was the reasonable prices -- food starting at $8, a glass of wine at $6, and deserts at $6. I understand they will be adding an outdoor patio and free wireless internet in the next few weeks as well. I'm in! Bill and I spent some time talking with Mary and Doug about local business, and community involvement. I was thrilled when they graciously offered to host their first fundaiser to benefit STOP, Save Tehachapi's Orphaned Pets, a rescue that was founded in January to expand the pet fostering system and work toward building a much-needed animal shelter in Tehachapi. On Wednesday, May 14th, the Wine and Cheese Cellar will be donating 15% of all food, beverage and retail sales to STOP. All you have to do to help us raise money for the pets is to come in on that evening, from 4pm to 8pm, and mention STOP. A portion of your final tab, before taxes, will then be donated by Mary and Doug to this non-profit rescue. For more info on their business, visit http://www.wineandcheesecel.... For STOP, visit www.TheStoppers.org or watch the Canine Creek website for updates on the event. In the meantime, you might want to stop in to take a peek at this comfortable and classy establishment. But, please, save me a seat on that really cool cowhide sofa in the back of the room. :-) 8 comments from 6 users

Hey Sparks -- nice to see you on the boards again! Missed you at the last STOP meeting. Next one is May 8th. Hope to see you there. Just as clarification... the business name is "Wine & Cheese Cellar". A Touch of Class in Tehachapi was just my blog title. :-) posted by

Trouble, yep it's great what a lot of women and men are doing for the animals here in Tehachapi. I made some wine once. I so sucked at it... it tasted horrible, but what a buzz!!!! lol posted by

I too enjoy hanging out at Mama Hillybeans for the Wi-Fi (free internet access), love the atmosphere there. I haven't been to A Touch of Class yet, but it's on my list of things to do this week now that I am back in town. I'm looking at my wine rack now and all I have is a couple bottles of Toasted Head and a bottle of Three Blind Moose...good wines, but as you can see my stock is very low. (grin) Wow, I've only been gone a few weeks and I am amazed at all the flowers that have popped up... it's nice to be home. posted by

A touch of class sounds like a welcome addition to the community. We'll be there on May 14 to support S.T.O.P. Cristina Campbell posted by

Yep, Charlee, I love Mama Hillybeans too. They have free Wi-Fi, so it's my second office on many weekday afternoons. The chicken salad sandwich on wheat bagel is very tasty. I've never stayed for the evening entertainment, but they are having a Celtic band on Saturday night.... might have to go check that out. posted by

I, too, dropped in one day when I got back up the hill earlier than usual, expecting a retail wine cellar. I was pleasantly surprised, and decided to stay and sample some of their varietals at the wine bar. I struck up a conversation with two very nice ladies sitting next to me, and soon we were talking like buddies. One was celebrating her birthday, and the chef brought her one of those Napoleons as a birthday "cake". The chef, it turns out, used to work at the Bear Valley CC restaurant. (Yes, that Napoleon is to die for, and the cheese platters are heavenly!) I called the wine server over and told him that I gave the place a year. He looked shocked until I said that after a year, they would need to expand and I hoped there was enough room in the building. My hubby and I are going there this weekend; I think we have found a new haunt. BTW, have you been to MamaHillybean's yet? It's great, also. posted by

Wow! This is so exciting..since I like wine-a LOT!!!-and it is something I especially lok forward to after a looonnnggg day of "WHINE" at my house...too bad the dogs can't come too. I will be there with my pooch-loving husband in tow-and I'm going to get my wine-tasting parents over here from the coast too. My father held the title of "International Wine Master" for many years and travelled all over the world meeting with restaurant owners, helping them select their wine lists. My mom got to go too-usually! Then he had a stroke so its hard for him to share the vast wine cavern of knowledge hiding somewhere in his fantastic brain. But he'll be there, enjoying some wines and contributing to the group his daughter enjoys being a part of! Thank you to our new business and to Mary for hosting this wonderful fund raiser for STOP!
