Ackstabbing Itches
I had planned on this being a happy blog, and in some ways, it is. However, the inherent callousness of some people has once again reared its ugly mug, and I must change the tone of my writing to match the angry grinding of my teeth. On Monday, I became a mother again. I adopted a three-day-old kitten whose mother had abandoned it. We have a feral cat colony at my office, which lives for the most part in the fenced sump next door. Some of us have been taking turns feeding them; on the sad occasions when we have found one dead, I am the one they count on to take care of that, too. So no one was surprised when I took this little baby in. My boss even understood that it would be necessary to bring the kitty to work with me; as long as I was discreet and it did not interfere with my work, he had no problem. When some of the women in my office found out about the kitten, they went kazoo. Just the thought of a cat in the office, regardless of its size or age, was repulsive to them. They automatically assumed that I was heating cat food in the microwave, which I was not. But instead of talking to me about it, they went whining to one of the other bosses, who promptly called MY boss on the carpeting for allowing me to do such a sickening thing as keeping a baby kitten in the office. It was suggested that I "just leave it out there and let nature take its course", and someone even had the temerity to tell me I should drown it! I had no choice but to put the kitty in her carrier outside, behind our building, and go out there every two hours to feed her. One of these "ackstabbing itches" who complained about my heating cat formula in our microwave heats menudo in that same microwave at least once a week. Just the thought of that stuff makes me nauseous, and it ruins my appetite to watch her eat it. Another one of them actually brought in chitlins! The office reeked for the whole day. But warming kitten formula made of milk, egg yolk, yogurt and corn syrup is repulsive, right? I have had this kitty for five days now, and she is thriving nicely, the "ackstabbing itches" notwithstanding. They can choke on their chitlins, for all I care. I'll just wait until one of them needs my help for something again. Rest assured, my baby and I will just turn our "acks" and walk away. 9 comments from 7 users

I'm so glad to hear that you took the kitten in! It was so nice in the beginning to hear of your boss being so understanding... but I can't believe how awful some of your co-workers were! Just disgusting. Anyway, I hope kitty survives and thrives. At least it's warm enough outside that kitty should be nice and cozy. Congrats on becoming a new pet mommy again :) posted by

Oh, dang, that's sad. Thanks for taking in the kitten, Charlee. I wish there were more people like you in the world to fight for the tiny helpless ones. It's not easy, but you're doing a good thing! posted by

Charlee, I'm deathly allergic to cats, I have actually been in the ER 3 times near death because of cats, and even I would not have stopped you from heating kitty formula in the microwave or prevented you from having that poor kitten in the office for a few days until it got older/stronger But, that is me. I understand some people may have a problem with allergies or not liking animals as much as you do. In fact I know many people who would prefer to have an animal free... work area, car, house...etc. It's hard for animal lovers like you and I to even conceive the thought that there are people who do not like animals. However, it is true many people are not pet people. Some of the remarks and actions of your co-workers were appalling, not the kind of people you would want to babysit your new baby kitten. YIKES! I wish you and your new baby the best. posted by

Man what kind of office do you work in? I couldn’t stand working with the “ackstabing itches” you have to deal with it makes me want to replace their coffee creamer with KMR. (Kitty Milk Replacement) What you have done is beyond the call of duty and a few of us no matter what the circumstance s are put here on earth to care for the animals that are abandoned and need our help. Keep up the good work and I am sure kitty will be fine since our weather is good but if you feel she needs some extra warmth I would suggest to get a heating pad and set it on low then put some extra towels or a blanket so it won’t get to hot in the carrier with her. I can understand the allergy aspect of cats, as some like Sparks are deathly allergic, but most sane people would just talk to you and tell you they have severe allergies. As to the person who wants to drown kitty to hell with them maybe they should drown instead. I could go on and on but again thank you for helping this baby. posted by

Hey, I posted this on my Bakersfield.com blog and someone commented that the coworkers are right, and I should have just left the kitten outside with some food and water because "it's a cat and cats are supposed to be outside". Just the mindset that causes our orphaned pet problem to begin with. I was also told that it is not cool to "hate on" my coworkers. No matter how hard you try, there are just people out there with "me-me-me" attitudes, and delusions of royalty. Oh well. posted by

Sparks...sorry you are so allergic. I am too, but have built up a resistance over the years. When I was a kid, I too was in and out of ERs with asthma attacks, some brought on by animals. What a drag...can't imagine my house without my kitties, our big huge boxer and our lovely fish tank. posted by

Ackstabbing itches (BTW, love how creative you are) are just that; I would hate to be any of them and/or work w/"people" like that. Good for you, doing the right thing, rescuing the kitten; anyone else (i.e., your Bakersfield blog) who says otherwise is a moron, and I am being kind; it's not a judgment, it's an observation. Okay, I can just hear Progresso Dassani toiling over the typewriter/keyboard on that statement, but give me a break: What happened to people having a conscience and compassion. M. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make; our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

Thanks to you Charlee for taking little Miss Kitten in. Sorry it caused such a problem at work. I still can't believe what some of your "co workers" said and did. It's people like you that makes the world a better place to live. And check with the Humane Society--they may help you trap, spay/neuter the feral cats then re release them. Luv my cats -- great idea on the kitty Milk Replacer for Creamer!!!! LMAO! posted by

Awsmom is right the Tehachapi Humane Society can help with the cats that are located by your work place. They do a trap, spay/neuter then release program. It will save many cat lives and much suffering as well. Go to tehachapihumane.org for more information...the people there are very nice and more than willing to help.
