Composting

Is there anyone that can help me figure out a composting system?  I'm single, with a tiny yard, so it's not practical for me to have a huge 3 compartment bin that's 8' by 4' by 12', lol.  What I'm looking for is something small and easy that will help me be a little greener and help my garden be its best.

I'm going to keep looking for solutions online, but if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.  So far, i've only found large property appropriate compost ideas.

I once saw an infomercial for a "spinning composter" type thing... like a big drum on a stand and you spin it every day. Right now, I just did a quick search for "compost drum" and there are several to choose from -- but I did not see anything for under $200!  yikes!  good luck! If this type of thing might work for you, check eBay or craigs list... maybe you'll luck out!

I live in an apartment, so I don't think just having a pile would really be the way to go.  I'm pretty sure that, apart from plants, we have to be able to take anything that we add to the yard with us when we leave.

I also don't have manure to add to it.  I'd be a paper, yard clippings, and food waste type composter.

One problem with food waste is the critters--racoons and mice!

We just compost in a plastic garbage can  outside and mix it around with a shovel  every once in a while, and use it every spring in the garden.

You make it sound pretty easy.  Any need for watching percentage of different items in the can (food, leaves, paper, etc.) or need to add nitrogen or anything?

I used to use a plastic garbae can too. Here's a link to a website on how to do it:

or you can just google "garbage can composting"

Good luck!
