Does anyone remember ten years or more ago the city of tehachapi paying some firm to do a study of the teh area to see what big box store would best suit tehachapi? If i remember right the firm suggested a Target. Does anyone remember?

Target would be a great store to have.  When Wal mart arrives, I'll be going there as well. (sorry Bigdog)  I don't want to see one here.  I don't want to see Tehachapi grow up at all.  Being a small rural community does keep a lot of rif faf from moving here.  No matter how big we may get, Tehachapi will always be a beautiful place to live.  Cheaper prices, mean cheaper quality?  Depends on what you are buying.  If you are buying household items, shampoo, cleaning supplies, school supplies, you are getting the same quality of merchandise for a "bargain" at Walmart.  If you are buying furniture, electrical items from Walmart I would think you would already know that it is cheap quality. Kmart recently went through a whole new revamping of their store.  What did it accomplish?  You still get the crappy service.  The 2 or 3 check out lanes open, you have to go search for a scanner to find out the price of something and their employees are not customer friendly.  My first instinct when going to purchase items was to go over to kmart, but recently, after being disgusted everytime I have to go there, I have found that shopping at Walgreens is a much better experience.

I would rather see a Target in Tehachapi than a Wal-Mart also. However, that is not what is coming in for whatever reasons. I agree that if you take price over quality you will get what you purchase, I cheap lower quality product. But if you can't afford the higher price then what would you do to streach your dollar?

As for how Targets treat their employees? I don't know and can't comment since I don't know anyone that has worked in one as of yet. As for customer service goes, I would have to say I have gotten bad customer service from each of the three and good to great customer service at K-Mart and Target from time to time also.

Olivia, you are right. I should have been more clear about the type of products that are cheaper. But the people at Save-mart have earned my business.

I hear everyone complain about the bad service they receive from the K-mart and the other large stores in the area. Gosh, who do you think the people will be that work at Wally's when it gets here in 2011? The same  people that work for min wage. The same people that work twenty hours a week. The same people that give us that great service that K-Mart is famous for.  Wake Up. The same people that work at K-mart will work at Wal-mart. Wal-mart will be nothing more than a scar on the landscape. Oh, with lower prices.

I wonder what mitigation fee's they will pay?

PS. Remember what the blog was about? Wal-Mart sued this lady to re-coup the money for health care they provided to her when she was involved in an accident that left her brain damaged.

Good customer service starts at the store manager. If the store manager does not show good customer service then his employees want either. The manager at K-mart fall into that category.I'll tell you what I am not saying all but K mart hires people that aren't smart. More times then not i am amazed at how dumb some of their check out people are. They move really slow and they can't count your change back to you. I always look right at the checker then count the money to be sure its correct. and why is it every time i am in line there is a problem with the pricing on the merchandise. Somebody is always ''running'' back to get another product to scan or needing the manager to fix the problem.I am not a fan of Wal-Mart i don't think the community is in their best interest. I think our local business owners will suffer Much like they did when K-mart came here. The only silver lining that i see is that Wal-Mart will most likely chase K-Mart away. Kail you are right when you say that K-Mart employee will become Wal- Mart employee's. Lets hope that Wal-Mart brings in a store manager that demands customer service and demands that his employee's also give good customer service.

Thank you.

Bigdog clothing rocks. Glad they don't sell it at either K-mart or Wal-mart.

I can't wait for Wal-mart to get here. I am part of a low income household and K-mart prices are higher. I can't ever get to Lancaster or Bakersfield to shop, so I am forced to spend more. As for people working 40 hours a week.... how many places offer that any where now. If all you have is a high-school diploma then you probably are going to feel lucky to get 35 hours a week.

If and when Wal-Mart comes and forces K-Mart out of business, don't you think that they will take advantage of being the only department store in town and raise their prices?

I actually know a really lucky kid from high school that makes a 6 figure salary with only a high school diploma. He works for a wind energy company based in the midwest.

Bigdog--did Tehachapi really spend money for a study to figure out which big box store would do well here?  Did they do anything with the study?  Any effort to woo Target here?  Probably not.  As much as I like Wal-Mart, I would rather of had a Target Supercenter built here. Makes me wonder if Tehachapi has a 5, 10. 15 or 20 year plan or if it is "redone" every time a new city council or city planner is hired.  Why pay for a study of you are not going to do anything with the results.  And decisions that require an outside firm to evaluate the city's needs are not done--as evidence with the fire station as well as where the final site of the new city hall is going to be.   It seems the approval for businesses is hit or miss--look at the "backwards" building as you first drive into Tehachapi.  Tehachapi has to potential to remain a quaint small town and still allow growth, but only if the growth is well thought out and planned.

So Dragonlilly I guess you will be 2nd in line when Walmart opens--I'll be first in line so I will see you there!  Who wants to be 3rd?
And countygirl I am not "money hungry."  I am a single parent with 2 kids making ends meet.  Every dollar saved is a dollar for a rainy day.

awsmom i do remember reading about this in the TN years ago. I don't remember the details. Sorry.

awsmom - you and me will toss a coin to be first in line, lol!

I just bought a Christmas gift for one of my grandkids at Walmart. Name brand and $2.00 cheaper than Target or Michaels. The rest of you can turn your nose up and spend extra money, I don't care.

I will say again I don't want another box store built here be it Walmart or Target. But as oldcoot stated, we're getting one whether we like it or not, and I will patronize it. Another thing about Walmart that I really like is they hire the older generation. Almost all the clerks yesterday were in my age group while the kids are in school. Not many companies welcome "senior citizens".

Joty and Dragonlily--you guys can be first after ME at Walmart! I plan on parking my motorhome in the parking lot and camp out til it opens!  Yes Joty--they do hire a lot of senior citizens.  My kids (age 12 and 14) asked yesterday if I was going to work at Walmart and hand out carts since I am being recruited by AARP--I turn 50 in April!

All you union minded people need to understand that wal-mart is just offering the same product for less money. How the store looks and the people act, I could care less. But I also know that I am happy to have our own police department here. With places like wal-mart and home depot the 1/2 cent sales tax goes directly to our police and fire protection. Why would you want your tax dollars supporting a community you don't even live in. Also I have lived in Tehachapi for pretty whole my life. I know the old Tehachapi that I once knew is no longer here, so lets make it convenient and easy to not have to spend money on gas to support other towns. You all need to get over the fact that Tehachapi is not what it used to be and it will never be again. I am pro wal-mart just because my wages are not going up with the inflation. Last time I checked the lady at albertsons did not care how much money I made, She just said that milk is a crazy $6.00 per gallon. Lets keep our town nice but still convenient for shopping and taking care of everyday life. By for now!!
