Senior Center Updates??

So since I'm already on here and have been blogging for the last couple days I figured I'd ask if anyone knew what was going on with the senior center. I know they put the renovations needed out to bid and were unhappy with the results so they decided to have their own(the cities) people do them. This was quite awhile ago and I haven't heard anything about it.( I admit I haven't been watching the council meetings quite as closely as before though. ) Have they even started these renovations? Did they even get back to them with an estimate? If not why was the ball dropped? Our seniors are a huge part of our community and our town. They deserve a nice place to hang out (especially in the summers) just as much as depots need restoring to be used as office space. Maybe more, ya think?? So does anyone know what's going on with this project? Any info would be great. Thanks!

The Kern County Community and Economic Development Department administers the City's contract with HUD whose funds built the Senior Center.  They have insisted upon an amendment to the lease in order for the City to be in compliance with its HUD contract.  The lease amendment places certain financial reporting requirements on the seniors that they have been unwilling to accept.

The seniors and their attorney have been in discussions with the City attorney and hopefully everyone will reach a consensus soon.  When they do there is $29K and change waiting in the budget for much needed repairs to the Senior Center, for instance new roof, AC, and a list of other items they need.

Thank you for your interest in the seniors and the Senior Center.  They do an awesome job providing a wide variety of activities and entertainment and I am happy to be the City Council liaison to the Senior Center.

Stan
