Frustration

As most of you know I am a Mother of 3 special needs children and I also take care of my mentally handicapp brother. The past couple of days have been pretty rough arround here due to an incident with my son and school. It is extremly frustrating and I don't know all the in's and out's and what I can do. I have been doing some research online and have found out some interesting laws related to my son and the situation. But there are some questions and concerns I cannot find answers for anywhere so I feel sorta "screwed".

I am wondering if there are any other parents of special needs children that also have had or are having problems with our local district? And do you have any resources to obtain information?

How come you don't send him to Arvin like his brother does?  Maybe that would be a better situation for him.

This punching of an aid lets say is the one time it got reported properly and I will leave it at that. I am aware that they can only suspend a special ed child for a maximum of 10 days not sure if it is for the entire school year or for a 10 day time period. He does have a behavior support plan and it is not a very good one in my opinion and it has been changed now. The district is going to do a Functional behavior analysis in the next three weeks. I feel that his actions are a part of his disability but I was told I was wrong on that. Therefore I plan to visit the Fragile X website today and find out some info. and see if I can prove them wrong. Which I am pretty sure I can because my oldest son who also has Fragile X has the same behavior problems and so does my older brother who also has Fragile X.

I was offered other alternatives to his placement, such as homeschooling him. Homeschooling is out of the question for several reasons one being I need to break. I am raising 3 special needs children and taking care of one adult with special needs I need the break. Sorry if that sounds selfish to anyone but I am not superwoman!! And he needs to go to school and be taught by a proffessional.

Because there are certain individuals reading my blog I will refrain from actually commenting on my personal opinion of what I actually felt and what should of happened. I will say this I felt like the village idiot!!

In conclusion they are going to shorten his day by about 3 hours and provide him with his own bus to and from school and his Behavior support plan was changed somewhat.

Thankyou for the information californiabeso

Is this the first time this has happened?  If he punches people and this is part of his disability, the school CAN NOT suspened him.  Just know that the max that he can be suspended is 10 days.  I hope he has a behavior support plan...I congratulate you for being your childs advocate.  We need more parents like you!!!  How did the meeting go?

IEP's are for special education students, it provides goals and objectives for the student and staff. It can be very simple to things such as the student will learn the ABC's by the end of the year to an extensive behavior plan that involves alot of details. Basically guidelines that every IEP team memember must follow.

Thanks Gube I am going to need the luck with this one!!! But I am a fighter and I WILL get what my child needs and deserves!!! Because I only want what is best for him and I want his school hours to be a good learning experience..I have dealt with stuff like this already with my 16 year old and I finally have him where he really needs to be, which is in Arvin....

I believe that is the acronym for an Individual Education Plan (used for special education students). It is a very process oriented system and with various administrative appeal remedies.

My 8 year old son has been suspended from school for 3 days because he punched an aid in the eye on the bus. I completly understand why he got suspended and my son does not understand why he is staying home.

There are several problems with his IEP and several items on the IEP are not being implemented. I have done some serious research online and hopefully I will have enough ammo for our meeting this afternoon. I will have to go at it alone because my husband has to be here for the other kid's and my behavior specialist called and is ill.

If you can tell me what the problem was at school, I can give you some information on your rights and the schools rights.
