WOW, that would be a shocker! Do you know what type of snake he is? I think he's probably not poisonous since his head is not triangular in shape.

I'm not positive what kind of snake, but i know he's not poisonous. I wouldn't let my husband kill it because I think he's harmless and maybe he'll keep the mice away or the big bugs anyway, and they have some big ol' bugs and spiders out here! They have some pretty poisonous snakes out here, including rattlesnakes, the biggies out here are copperheads and water moccasins....

He looks like a regular old gopher snake to me he probably was enjoying the heat when our weather turned on him forcing him to seek warmth it's a good thing you weren't boiling water or you might of had snake soup for dinner instead of taco's

LOL about the snake soup. Wouldn't get much out of him he's pretty skinny but long, hehe, never had snake b4 and not really in any hurry to try it...as far as being a gopher snake, I don't know if they have those out here(Indiana) but I tried to google it and so far it may be a Rat Snake? I don't know I look at all the local snakes and none of the ones I've seen I can say "oh yeah, that's what kind of snake it is" but I did learn a lot about snakes in general an this one is definitely NOT poisonous, Thank goodness posted by

The West doesn't have water moccasins or copperheads. We do have gopher snakes. This looks like a garter snake, which is often semi-aquatic but has some terrestrial varieties. Garter snakes are found from the sea to the tops of our mountains. They eat fish, amphibians, some bugs and small mammals. Try to never kill snakes or raptor birds because they really work hard to keep the pest populations down.

I agree with TK...... thinking it's a garter snake. I too try not to kill snakes. although I did have to kill a rattler last year. too many children around here to take a risk. I still feel awful about it. I do have a gopher snake who lives under my house that i have buddied up with. As Greg said if they do not have a triangler head they most likely are NOT poisonous. Farrina, I think your new pet is very cool!!! I hope he/she puts a little weight on though.

Well these are the 2 sites I went to.From what these sites say all the garter snakes have stripes that go down the length of their bodies, this snake doesn't. I'm wondering if it's a baby...which has my husband worried because he says there may be a nest in there. I'm still alright with it as long we don't get swarmed with snakes or something or it doesn't cause some damage to the house. LOL speaking of my husband, I didn't realize men could be so scared of snakes. Not just my husband, but the guy who worked for SBC came to check our phone lines and when I mentioned I had seen a little snake and I knew it wasn't poisonous, he said he wasn't gonna mess with the wiring anymore, he got all freaked and said I had to call someone else...What a WUSS! posted by

Personally I don't care what kind of snake it is, the only good snake is a dead snake to me!! I cannot stand those creatures!! Last year in the summer time I walked out of the house and right there in front of my door was a snake. I freaked out!!! I screamed of course and my husband came and started laughing at me, which got him into trouble!! But he took the snake via shovel and threw him out back into the field. So he survived ONLY because he was a gopher snake and I thought I would be nice...lol

I know many people have fears/don't like snakes, but I like them and have respect for them. Would I take a dump if I saw that coming out of the ceiling in my kitchen? Probably. But I wouldn't kill it. I know enough about them to know that one isn't venomous, so I would most likely call someone I know who knows snakes to have them take a look at it, and/or if they could, remove it to a safe place.

Ditto on your comment Mimi. I was startled at first, wasn't even sure what it was at first, almost looked like a cord or rope or something. But my feeling after realizing what it was was respect and relief knowing it wasn't poisonous. I will perobably be calling someone from the Natural Reserve office which is here in town to take a look at pics to see if they can help me identify it and let me know what I need to do, if anything. At the beginning of winter I thought me daughter was exagerating when she said she opened the utensil drawer in kitchen and saw a mouse holding a whole Choc chip cookie. Come to find out it was a chipmunk, I guess when you live near a the woods or lots of trees and vegatation your gonna run into a lot of critters... But when it comes to fears of the natural kind, I would have to say, Bees, wasps anything I think that sting that flies, I will about have a panic attack and make a complete fool out of myself if one comes at me. When I first moved out here I was very pregnant and we pulled up to a Wendy's for lunch, I would NOT get out of the car because there was a couple of Bumble Bees flying around. We actually had to leave cuz I wouldn't get out of the car. I'm better now that I'm not pregnant and have had to learn to live them , either that or stay in my house all day in the Spring and Summer. THere are LOTS of bugs out here. Heck I'm start to feel panicky just talking about it....LOL posted by

Most garter snake species have a pale yellow or orange middorsal stripe and a pale stripe on each side, but the position of the stripe varies. Some species are unstriped and some only have a ventral stripe and a checkered or spotted pattern. Most species have a red or orange tongue with black tips. About 30 species range between the East and West coasts. They can be from 10 to 60 inches long, depending on the species, food supply, and their age.

Looking at the pictures it looks like a juvenile species of Corn snake. We actually have one as a pet (the orange variety) but in the mid-west there is a subspecies called the great plains rat snake. There's a wikipedia article about it here:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Plains_Rat_Snake Its harmless (to people.. woe betide the unwary rat, however!) and very good to have around your yard. Makes a good pet too if you're so inclined. :) |
