Living with a Schizophrenic
This is my first post and I thought I'd like to let the community know that if you have a loved one with mental illness, Nami Tehachapi  has a support group that meets every other Wednesday 5pm-6:30pm at the College Community Services building 113 East F St.
I was fighting a battle for my loved one with no understanding or support from family. Nami has taken a load off of my shoulders with education, information and most of all empathy. I am a much stronger person now.

I did my Sociology term paper on "Mentally ILL Amongst the Homeless", with my focus on Schizophrenia.  It was very interesting and very frustrating at the same time.  I went all the way back when they discovered "the cure" in the 1950's.  I got some great information off of the NAMI website.  My goal was to become a Social Worker for the mentally ill.  Someday.... I volunteer and feed the homeless down here in San Diego.  It's just a heartbreaking situation.  But if we have hope and dont shut our doors or our eyes, things may get better.

I got an A+ on the paper

Growing up in the Knolls area of Simi Valley (very eclectic) I have seen a neigbor become mentally ill and now at the age of 48 he is living in a sandstone cave next to my parents property. He has been incarcerated many times for drugs and harrassing his mom. He sometimes stands on the hill and screams at no one. My mother always made sure he had candles, food and did what she could to help him. I am saddened that the system just jails him and lets him out knowing full well how ill he is. He is out of jail and roaming the Knolls. A gentle soul who is homeless in a cave and a harm only to himself.
