The costs to the four border counties in Arizona have increased by 39 percent from $19.2 million in 1999 to $26.6 million in fiscal 2006, researchers at the University of Arizona and San Diego State University found. Costs totaled $192 million for the nation's 24 border counties in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas - more than double the costs in 1999. posted by

Illegal immigration is costing Arizona border counties millions a year for law enforcement and criminal prosecutions, diverting money from parks, libraries and other law-enforcement efforts, according to a study to be released today.

Why aren't those who are in our country illegally deported? They know where these people live because the school has the student's address.

Gube you have a simplistic understanding and solution to this one. I like some of your stuff, but what you are up to borders on racism..it certainly is creating a chilling impact on all latinos... posted by

salud you are right I do have a simplistic understanding and solution to this And because to me its simple....Arrest and deport all people that are here in the United States of America illegally. To me it 's simple...............Now I know their not going to do that. There is too much money to be lost by doing so. Salud how can true comments and facts be racial? posted by

It borders on racism because you only post things related to illegal immigration from south of the border...and it is simplistic because there is incredible exploitation of human beings by people of power, resources and need for slave labor. The things these folks are willing to do to perptetuate this system are mindbongling..and it does include some of the politicos you name in your posts. My dad came to this country as a Bracero...contracted farm laborer. He was promised many things and then had his dignity and wages taken from him. This was legal. He jumped his contract to survive and became illegal. Now he's a citizen with dignity and after working hard, looks at his Chicano children with pride for they are Americans. posted by

salud 80+ of all illegals in the United States are from Mexico or other Latin countries. That means well over 80 of illegals cross the southern border. Not racial......Fact........ your dad was treated unfairly and badly and its sad that some Americans abuse immigrants legal or illegal. Did your dad become a citizen as a result of amnesty? posted by

Nope, not amnesty. It may be 80%, but what matters is the solution to the "problem". And to taylor a solution you need to have more than facts, and just a bit of history. The channeling of water has made California an oasis for agriculture. It matters what was done to our rivers and the creation of dams. But the story line in this one is that during the thirties many laws were broken in order to irrigate more than 160 acres of land. Large farms were turning into Agribusinesses with a voracious hunger for farm workers. Then nature helped with the dust bowls of the late 20's and 30's. They came and worked and lived in labor camps. Then the sons went off to fight in WWII. Farmers in need of workers turned to their southern neighbor and the Bracero Program was hatched. The farmers got very lucky with the help of the government, bringing in millions of Mexican campesinos to work in the fields. The program began in the 1940's and only ended in the mid sixties. It did two things, Agribusiness became a dominant economic and political force in CA politics; and the pressure for political reform and economic development in rural areas of Mexico softened. One can speculate on the basis of recent history in latin america what could have happened without this cooperation between the two governments, Braceros were able to send some of their money to their families to survive. However the pattern of migration had started and Braceros started to also walk away from their contracts for good reasons. This was the beginning...and it has turned into a migration issue, not an immigration issue. American business interests imported their labor and they continue to depend on this pattern. Legal strategies are an approach but do not solve the problem..and the way it is being addressed by ICE etc., is inhuman...tearing families apart, separating children from their parents etc. Step back Gube and look at the big picture. posted by

salud I disagree with you several things but Mostly the fact that they are illegal. You can Humanize the problem all you want but the bottom line is they are here illegally and something other then turning our backs on the problem and granting amnesty needs to be done. posted by

Salud, you'll just argue in circles with Gube on this one. What he doesn't seem to have is compassion for illegals, which is fine I guess. Gube, people like Salud just want to point out that these are human lives on the line. Families, sons, daughters, etc. It's easy to sit behind a computer and complain about this and want illegals to go away. But in reality you have to ask, what is being done on both sides of the border that's improving the living situation for those living in third world conditions? Our government has to take responsibility for creating some of the impoverished conditions south of the border that lends to mass illegal immigration. Putting more money in border security is not going to stop poverty. Building a wall is not going to stop poverty. We as Americans should demonstrate more compassion for those in need (illegal or otherwise). It's the right thing (or the Christian thing) to do. If you care so much about illegal immigration, you should demand that our government participate in fair trade practices. You should pressure our Government to pressure Mexico's government to have stricter tax laws, health codes and open up a free market for oil. Mexico is a wealthy nation, but the distribution of wealth is non-existent. You may ask, how did Mexico get to this point? Well, if this path continues with our slowing economy, our disastrous housing marketing and our shrinking middle class, you may find your answer. Perhaps 50 years from now, it'll be another country that will have to turn away Americans that want to enter their country. Then ask yourself, how much compassion will you have for them? posted by

Vader, Gube is scapegoating illegals. Does he think they would be here if some of the powers that be are not benefitting from their presence, and this includes most of the food suppliers that feed folks like Gube, and the service industries where people go to play. They are at the bottom of the chain without power and living in fear. And a great many people continue to enjoy the benefits of their labor. Gube join the human race. A border doesn't turn a man into a criminal especially when he's been invited to help set the table, then denied a seat. posted by

LAS CRUCES, N.M.—Two Mexican men have been ordered held without bond after they were arrested in connection with an illegal immigrant smuggling scheme. Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Rosendo Gamez-Avila, 30, and Miguel Trejo-Meraz, 52, over the weekend for unlawfully transporting more than two dozen illegal immigrants inside a moving van. Border authorities responded to a call Saturday evening about a large group of people getting into a van on Arizona highway 80 near the Arizona-New Mexico border. The agents checked the van just south of Roadforks, N.M., and found three people in the cab and 27 others in the back. All were in the country illegally. An investigation revealed that the driver, Gamez-Avila, was promised $100 for each illegal immigrant. Trejo-Meraz, a border-crossing card holder, allegedly drove the van from Douglas, Ariz., to Arizona highway 80, where he delivered it for Gamez-Avila to load and transport the immigrants. Authorities said Trejo-Meraz was to be paid $200 for his role in the scheme. He was waiting on the side of the road for a ride back to Douglas when Border Patrol agents found him. Gamez-Avila is charged with alien posted by
