Police arrest illegals in airport lines going home

Good they need to be arrested and put in the system.Coming or going their still illegal and they still need to be held accountable.

Public defender: 'They are on their way home. ... It's not cost-effective'

HOUSTON – Public defenders in Houston are criticizing the recent arrests of illegal immigrants who were pulled out of airplane lines when attempting to fly home to their native countries.

Since July, at least five people have been arrested at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport while trying to board planes headed to Mexico, Honduras or El Salvador, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. All had been deported previously.

Federal public defenders who take on these cases call the practice a waste of time and money.

"What's silly about this is that they are on their way home," said Houston federal public defender Marjorie Meyers. "They have gotten the message that they shouldn't be here. It's not cost-effective."

U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle defended the practice, saying that if authorities allowed illegal immigrants to leave without punishment, it would minimize government efforts to control the border.

He also described the five defendants as repeat violators of U.S. immigration laws.

"We feel it's definitely worth the resources to hold these people accountable," he said.

Airline passenger lists are routinely checked to find people who have broken the law, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Kelly Klundt.

But assistant federal public defender Michael Herman said authorities shouldn't bother with the time and expense of prosecuting someone who is already leaving the country.

"They are self-deporting," Mr. Herman said, "but they wind up in shackles and chains when these people have ... heeded the cry of the public for them to leave."

If a thief enters your house and eats your food, watches some TV then snoops around for a while and decides you ain't got nothing worth stealing so he decides to leave. Would you want that person arrested? ......Yes you would!

 This is the same deal.

The illegals are here illegally so they should be arrested.

Coming or going it don't matter, Illegal is illegal......

How is it that illegal immigrants are able to go on international flights?  These people aren't self-deporting, they're just going back and forth under lax security.

Usually I think you're a little nutty about the immigration stuff, Gube, but I think this is pretty outrageous too!  What do you think- Castle Law as a national policy?  I sure wish they had it in CA.

Yeah, they're self deporting - and, in no time at time, they'll be self importing illegally.

Problem is they come back the same way they leave so arresting them can cause some trouble for them, what public defender Marjorie Meyers might not putting into the equation is that January / February is the biggest month for illegals to go home for a month or so and visit their relatives because the farming season is over due to winter. So it is cost effective IMO. Pull them out of line and arrest them and dump them so far south into Mexico that they can't get back.

There has been an increase in sweeps and raids in airports. You might have heard about "Operation Tarmac", "Operation Return to Sender" or other similar raids in the news. These have generally targeted airport employees. In addition to the raids, there has been at least one airport, Los Angeles (LAX) in which immigration agents have randomly approached persons who "look like" immigrants to ask for their papers, and have detained passengers and placed them in deportation/removal proceedings. This is not the norm though. I've done alot of travelling and I am not American and my immigration status has NEVER been questioned at all when exiting the US. I always found it to be such a lax in security that they are so concerned about who is entering the country yet they keep no solid record of who has actually left the country.

It sounds a little like you want to have your cake and eat it too. You don;t want illegal immigrants here yet the govt isn't taking any effective steps to eradicate the problem. When they take it upon themselves and leave voluntarily you are still unhappy and would rather spend your tax dollars holding/trying/incarcerating them.  I personally feel that it is a waste of resources to apprehend people that are willingly leaving of their of volition. Let them leave and use those resources instead to make re-entry into this country more difficult for them.

Where do you stand on issues like the Green Card Lottery?

The United States government issues 55,000 Green Cards every year through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery. Applicants are selected randomly by a computer generated drawing. If selected, the main applicant, spouse and all unmarried children under 21 years of age will have a chance to apply for permanent resident status in the United States.
