Sheriff Arpaio is a National Hero
Sheriff Arpaio for President of the United States. MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Dozens of Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and posse members descended on the small town of Guadalupe in an effort to curb what the sheriff said are street crimes involving illegal immigrants. Within the first three hours of the 2-day operation in Guadalupe, deputies arrested 15 people, 4 of whom are illegal immigrants. The sheriff's office says deputies were ordered to stop drivers for minor traffic violations and ask for identification. In some cases, people were stopped for littering. The heavy sheriff's office presence in the largely Hispanic town of about 5,500 people included roughly 30 patrol cars, 60 civilian volunteers known as posse members and a helicopter. Throughout the town, a number of handwritten signs had been posted along main roads asking the sheriff's office to leave. One read, "This is our home. Leave us alone."

As we should know or should be aware, the majority of the national press has ultra liberal investigative reporters and editors. They will demonize public servants, law enforcement or just about anybody who doesn't go along with their fanatical grain? posted by

Sure, if being a national hero includes corruption, theivery, dehumiliation of inmates, lies, and scandals. He's only directing attention to the issue of immigration (about time, it's only been happening for YEARS), to make himself look like less of a crook. Anyone who thinks Joe Arpaio is anything less is either blinded by the wool over their eyes, or are mentally incompetant, and shouldn't even brush their teeth without proper supervision. posted by

The dehumanization of inmates ha ha ha ha ROFLMAO......What are you a bleeding liberal for criminals......Hey you do the crime and you do the time. So exactly what is so wrong with making criminals wear pink underwear and sleep in tents? These criminals know the deal, they deserve no better........ Go Joe.... posted by

Why is the dehumanization of inmates so funny, gube? Here's some words from a famous bleeding heart concerning prisoners: "...whatever you have done for the least of these, you have done for me." Basically Joe gets big cheers from the boobs with his pink underwear and tent schtick, meanwhile the "they're criminals, you can do anything you want with them" mentality leads directly to such tragedies as a 130-pound, mentally handicapped man dying of aphysia caused by his restraints after being picked up for loitering. A real man would have let his mother (who was at the arrest) take the poor kid home, don't you think? Or it leads to the petty criminal found comatose in his cell with a broken neck, broken toes, and internal injuries including ruptured intestines. Sheriff Joe claimed those injuries were caused by a fall from a 42" high bunk bed. There are also the cases of parapelgic strapped into the restraint chair (after annoying the guards by asking his catheter bag be replaced) so hard that his neck was broken. (Odd, uh? A cripple requires the "restrai nt chair"?) So now he's a quadrapelgic. Then there was the diabetic woman who died after being denied insulin for 3 weeks in Joe's great jail. So you can cheer this guy's publicity stunts on if you like. He's just another crooked sheriff with a wide mean streak. posted by

my comments on dehumanization was in regards to the inmates being forced to wear pink undies and be housed in tents. Sheriff Joe also has the only female chain gang in the country. Do I think this is wrong, dehumanizing No I don't. Do I think its funny that the inmate have to wear pink underwear, Yes I think its hilarious. posted by

The humor of the pink underwear gag comes from the symbolic emasculation of the men forced to wear it. That makes it at least a petty dehumanization. But as for "petty" cases of dehumanizations and worse cases of brutality, the same guys do both things. I don't think that is a coincidence. But your man Joe does both, and it certainly ought to disqualify him as a "real American hero" or as a candidate for president. Unless this babe is your idea of a hero, of course.

Why do we call for "humane treatment" (cable tv, weights, restaurant-quality food...) for inmates that dehumanize themselves? Would any self-respecting person throw feces at another person? Hide shanks in "secretive" places to stab inmates/COs, just because the idea of "kill or be killed" is so ingrained or because their gangs tell them to do it? They want to act like animals- treat them like animals. If they want to reform themselves, get the privledge of working or getting out into the fresh air- let them prove themselves. And maybe when they get out, they'll know that bad behavior is not tolerated. As for the deaths, were any of us there to witness what was going on? Have any of you ever tried to wrestle an uncooperative person to the ground? Disabilities don't always equal weakness (I think many people that are disabled or know someone that is disabled would be quite offended by the insinuation). A prison needs to be strictly controlled because inmates have no control. I'm not making excuses for prison guards that engage in neglect or excessive violence- but I am saying that we tend to be quick to judge when we don't even know all the details. posted by

If parents brought their child to an emergency room with a broken neck and internal injuries and claimed they were caused by a fall from a bed, they would be prosecuted, and you wouldn't be defending them with a post asking if any of us were there to see it. As for difficulties in wrestling an uncooperative person to the ground - it would depend on your skill, your judgement, and your training. Law enforcement personnel are supposed to have all three. They'll always have folks willing to make excuses from them as well. As for the details and facts you think we need, if you want more details (I doubt it, frankly), they are available. 20/20 even did a long story on one of the cases a couple of years ago. But why do we treat people humanely, you ask? First, note that I never criticized the use of tents, nor did I claim that humane treatment requires cable tv, weights, or restaurant-quality food - but I did think that using the words of Jesus might have given you a hint. We are commanded to humane treatment because our fellow men - even men as depraved as you assume are created in the image of God. To refuse to grant humane treatment is a debasement of ourselves, not of the victim.

Treating people humanely because Jesus tells you to is a little lacking in realism, don't you think? Back then, the worst people were just stoned to death. Society didn't have to deal with them like we do. I suppose if Jesus were a CO and had feces thrown at him, he would just turn the other cheek... and get more thrown at him... and maybe get a disease to boot. But I guess that would make him a martyr. I've always wondered how this "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" worked. Nobody would ever get punished! So much for that Jesus guy... Next Genius, Please! I would certainly question guards for the "falling out of bed" incident. I would also question the inmate as to why he refused to show ID and started an altercation with the guards that ended with him being put in lockdown. Once when I was a kid, I poked my sister until she turned around and smacked me. When I cried to my dad, he just said, "You asked for it." I'm not saying the inmate asked for severe injuries- but a little common sense on his part would have prevented the entire thing. These guys want all the respect in the world, but don't do a thing to earn it. posted by

Obeying Jesus may be hard, but if you abandon the tenants of Christianity, a whole world of opportunities open up to you - human sacrifice included. Its been done before and I suppose it could be again. As for what Christ would do if feces were thrown at him, he famously "turned his face like flint" and took far worse. But I'm not insisting that a CO ignore such a provocation, and I am sure they don't. Obviously disciplines need to be imposed in such a case, and I'm sure they are. How that ties in with pink underwear I have no idea. As for why a prisoner refused to show ID? I suppose he was angry and stupid? Got a better idea? So, you're saying the guy shouldn't have been killed? Nice of you to notice. Kind of hard to "question the inmate" at this point though. posted by

Hell if I was king I would not only make criminals wear pink undies but I would also dye their hair pink to. Dehumanizing is exactly what most criminals need. Make them think twice before braking the law. posted by

Wow... so what you're saying is that anyone that isn't Christian is inhumane? And that Christians are all terribly humane? History proves you wrong, my friend. I think the pink underwear is great. It's embarrassing, as are many of the other punishments. The only person that would like being there is some kind of emotional masochist. It sure beats other prison systems because (1) it punishes them and (2) it's cheap. In CA it costs $31,000 to incarcerate a person for a year. The sheriff's approval rating says it all. Apparently the general public (you know, the non-offenders) thinks he's doing a good job too.
