Tehachapi Man Eats Live Snake
http://www.bakersfield.com/... Please check out the link first. Okay now I am not a huge animal right person and think PETA is full of wack jobs that have no grab with reality but this guy needs to be arrested for animal cruelty. The killing of the snake itself does not bother me but the way he did it does. How on earth does it make him a survior to eat a kill snake? 44 comments from 16 users

If you watch Man vs. Wild or Survivorman, they eat live animals all the time. They do it on Fear Factor. Oh, and just about every other culture in the world does it, too! By the way, from the article: "One man, earlier in the day, she said, ate crickets." I don't hear anyone crying out for the crickets' rights. I'm totally against mistreating animals that we are using for a purpose, like a pet or a pack animal or a dairy cow or an animal in a zoo. They are serving a fairly unnatural purpose that we have thrust upon them, I believe they should be treated with respect. But if we are using an animal for what they are meant to be used for - namely food - then I think being "inhumane" is moot. We're just another predator. posted by

First, I don't have a probable with killin ghte snake, second, on Man vs Wild, Bear doesn't eat live animals such as snakes, fish , or etc He does kill them first.. He does eat bugs and worms live but I don't believe they suffer since they are eaten whole. Suriviorman also kills the animals first. Thrid, does one make the other right? No. The only problem I have is the fact that he eat the snake alive. It was not a instead death but a slow one. Had he killed the snake then took the bite fine, but live in wrong. As for bringing religion into this as no bring to the humane way to kill the snake. I will agree that God did give us domain over the animals. posted by

I am in total agreement with christibdce. There are many cultures that eat live animals for their survival. And as for this rattler being a poor, defenseless creature: excuse me aren't rattle snakes venomous? Don't they have rattles that protect them by frightening off predators? My feeling is that all those lashing out at this man for proving he is ready to be a real survivor and not just another "pretty boy" that the media and Hollywood can profit from, are jealous they couldn't prove that they are real survivors.

Why do people care so much about what other people do on TV??! I hope that CBS cancels Survivor and all the other networks follow suit by canceling all those crappy reality shows that have pervaded primetime. Quit acting like the snake has feelings, geez. Animals suffer that same fate all the time in nature, do you feel sorry for them? posted by

RM6, I agree that the current phase of reality TV is over the top and would love for something different. One or two reality show was enough for most but now you almost can't flip the dial without finding one. As for the true topic of the blog; First I don't care if the snake had or has feelings, my problem was that I don't feel the killing was humane, period. Even in the wild most killing is done quickly due to the fact that the predators does not want get hurt while killing their prey. True some animals don't kill in the most efficnet matters either, but we have an intellect that allowes us to use the ability to kill humanely. If we were in a true survivior situation then the rules would change to meet it. In one last remark, a couple of you have mentioned how other cultures eat animals alive. True, I know this is done and it is their culture. Now when am I going to start seeing Steak of Horse, Stuffed Puppy Rice, and Cat Strew, those are of other cultures that we don't access here. I personally could care less if someone eats a dog or cat for dinner as long as they aren't stealing someones pet. So if you are willing to accept one cultures eating habits why not them all? posted by

jer72-What makes you think I don't accept all cultures? Whether our politically correct culture participates in the same practice or not is moot. The only valid point I feel you make is that we, as humans, have an intellect. I wish more humans would engage their intellect and use spell check or at the very least proof read their text before posting a blog, but that's the copy editor in me rearing it's ugly head. This was no stolen pet...it was a venomous and dangerous snake, the type that I see more often than I would care to while walking my dog in the mountains of Tehachapi. Believe me when I am foot to fang with a snake I don't take the time to think about whether my reaction to kill this animal is humane or not. posted by

CJS, As you did not direct the issue of cultural acceptance in your post those comment were not meant for you. Remember I am defending my point view with others who did bring the idea of multi-cultural acceptance into the blog. I understand killing a snake by whatever means neeed in the case of crossing it's path to ensure ones safety. I have cross many a poisonous snake and only killed a few, maybe due to my exeprince around them or just luck. If it is in a populated area I would naturally kill it myself also. However snakes are part of the landscape of Tehachapi and have their purpose here. As I said before, it was the way he killed the snake that was inhumune. This was not out on a walking trail but in a car dealerships lobby. As for some of my past post in this blog, yes I know I didn't check my spelling and should have. Sorry if that bothers you but to error is human. posted by

If the snake was a Gopher Snake, which is probable due to their native-ness and their propensity to hiss, then a terrific vermin catcher was mortally wounded for entertainment. How very Roman. I worry about those who are willing to excuse a barbaric act. To peel off a living creature's skin and then cut or tear pieces of its flesh as it writhes in pain and panic is barbaric. I don't give a hoot if anyone's culture says it's okay. Snakes are interesting members of our planet. Snakes are deaf. They are very sensitive to vibrations (so they feel very well through their skin). The scales are not bony like a fish but rather like a fingernail. The tongue is flicked out to pick up scents on the air and then pulled back inside and pressed against a special chemical receptor to "read" what's around. The forked shape may help snakes determine which way prey is located by the density of chemical stimuli. Snakes can have one of four different methods of locomotion depending on their specific species. Each snake may have any of four different types of scales on its body. Gopher snakes are constrictors. Males show vestigal hind legs as a small spur on each side of the vent. Females lay eggs in clutches of 2 to 20 around this time. I hope the snake under discussion was able to reproduce before being flayed alive. posted by

TK, I would probably agree that it a gopher snake also, don't know myself. However they do have a very close resemblance to a rattle snake and the fact that the story said he had it in his backpack and grab it out. From my experiences catching snakes that is not an easy feat with gopher or king snakes very mad. posted by

I find it hard to believe that someone would get really upset about this especially if it was indeed a rattlesnake. If this thing had been in someones backyard how would it have been humanely killed? By being shot, beaten to death or cut up with a shovel? Just because the snake is in your backyard or you come upon it on a trail, does this make it any less innocent? Also are the people who they interviewed bystanders or other people trying out for Survivor? I find it hard to believe so many were "appalled" at this. I'm sure there were a few, but then I'm sure some were just threatened that their chances of getting on the show had just been squashed.
