Does anyone have ANY information about any patients or Dr.s that were at the Keene tuberculosis hospital when it was open? Or does anyone have any relatives that have any stories of what kind of place it was when they were there.  I have been trying to find out information for YEARS and have not been successful at all.  It seems like a big secret and i need any help i can get.

Jewels, I have been looking for info on that too! One of the tabs from the paper here had some info written by (I think) a woman who had done research and intereviewed some survivors. I'm not sure if she was local or not. I wonder if they would have any info about it at La Paz, since that is where it originally was? It really is fascinating that such a place existed, yet odd that there is virtually no info. And believe me, I have scoured the internet! I haven't tried any of the libraries though - maybe one of the Bakersfield ones would have info... If you find anything, let me know! It's always been a fascination of mine.

believe me when i tell you i have looked EVERYWHERE.  There is a Dr.  Hans Einstein who is a Dr. In bakersfieldl, he does alot of work with valley fever, TB etc.  I spoke with Cesar Chavez' granddaughter (at the memorial site)...it is kind of a hush hush thing.  I have visited there a MILLION times.  They really dont volunteer any information.  I think it is fascinating too.  But my view is that there was some dark and ugly things that went on in those days at that hospital and people suffered there, horribly.  Especially the children that were housed there.  This is just my feeling...but i would bet that i am closer to the truth then not.

NOTE: Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers took that property and turned it into something beautiful and something important.

Here you go Jewels!  www.tehachapinews.com/home/ViewPost/20803

This is a link to the story we ran in our Winter Visitor's Guide. The author does live locally. I can email her and ask her to contact you if you wish. Also, in our Quality of Life tab, Mayor Ed Grimes shared his story about his birth mother being treated at the sanatorium when he was just a small boy,  which is how he came to Tehachapi and was ultimately united with his local foster parents.

Jewels, I read the article, sounds like a lot of institutions back in that time... Most were strick, I still have nightmares of my 1st grade teacher who used to hit me with a dang ruler on my hands and that was in the late 60's    Good thing times have changed.  Let us know if you find out anymore about it.  Interesting post.    Oh, I wanted to tell you that I had lunch with Cesar Chavez, he was born and has family in San Luis AZ just a few miles down the road from where I live.   Nice man, he was kind of quite though.. trying to eat as I was rattling off as usual.  lol  I was trying to talk him into cutting the strike short so I could work and get a paycheck.  I picked fruit when I was a teenager.

Yeah, i went to his son Birdie's wedding, At La Paz. he was a very nice man who did wonderful things for his people.  His son and my son Chris's dad were good friends.  Our kids went to school together.

Hi Jewels.  I wrote the article that appeared in the Winter Visitor's Guide.  Jim, who I interviewed, lives in Bakersifeld and I stay in touch with him.  If you like, I can give him your number and have him contact you -- I don't think he's big on computers.  At the moment he's cruizin in Israel but should be back soon.  Also, at the Beal library on Truxtun, there is a little room upstairs that is dedicated to local history.  You can view the newsletter that the Sanatorium published along with newspaper articles about the Sanatorium and Preventorium.  If you have any questions, my email is: halfmoonj@netzero.com.
