Photo cards blow...
I've got to get this off my chest. Apparently photo cards are all the rage this year. I know it must be true, because so far I've received at least five of them in the mail.

They blow, folks. I'm not sure which marketing prodigy convinced the masses that what friends and not-so-close-relatives want most from you is a picture of your family and a stamped signature, but let me tell you a little something...they lied.

What I most want when I open the envelope is some sort of small note, giving me the impression that you actually gave a moment's thought to me during the season. Something written in your own hand wishing me and mine well. Instead, what I get is a manufactured card, complete with manufactured name requiring almost no human touch whatsoever.

When I send out Christmas cards, I do it for those people in my life I actually care about, and I make sure that I mention it in the body of the card. I write it by hand and sign it by hand, because I think you are actually worth that much time out of my life. It's only once a year and I think for that one time of the year that I'm going to spend the money on a stamp, it should count. I may not send them to everyone in my zip code whom I've ever met, but the people who receive them know they matter.

Am I alone in this annoyance?

Yeah! It almost makes you want to send a big ol' full moon photo card back in response to those preening posers!

I sent out photo cards this year for the first time. I took the time and effort to get my kids around the Christmas tree while we were decorating it and took a shot of them enjoying themselves. I wanted to share that moment with my friends and family in wishing them a Christmas greeting. No, it's not hand-signed, but I did type it. It may be a manufactured card to some extent, but on the other hand, I did create the photo and the message. I really enjoy receiving photo cards, so I guess I don't share your opinion. They are a great way to catch up on growing children and extending families that I may not be able to see very often. They express something that writing simply can't. I'd much rather see faces of friends and family looking back at me when I open a card than just, "Merry Christmas, love so-and-so". I think any Christmas card is great though because on the other end, someone though enough of me to send me a message, and that is human touch enough for me.

I want a photo card with a hand written note inside, plus a drop of your sweat...  either love me hard or save your stamps and bandwidth..

I realize I may be in the minority here. I usually am on these blogs. But getting a "card" which is essentially a postcard with no signature or personalization on it just makes me feel like one more line you get to draw through on your project list. I'm not saying I'm right. I'm just saying that I really don't think I'm the only person who feels that way when they get something so impersonal. It's the same thing my realtor sent me for Christmas for the past two years --- a photo of him and his family, with a mechanical signature. I don't object to the photo itself --- I object to people thinking that it is the same thing as a real connection, so they don't even have to bother to sign it.
