One Ambulance for too many people
This week in the Bakersfield Californian there was an article about the Kern Board of Supervisors looking at ambulance response times in the county. Tehachapi area response times are lacking at best. The greater Tehachapi area has increased its population and yet there is still only one ambulance for all our citizens. This is only due to the fact the the Kern Board and Bakersfield City has allowed a monopoly for ambulance service provided by Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Halls company. What this means for us in Tehachapi is that when you need an ambulance you better hope you are the first in line. The current plan calls for back up from Arvin or Mojave but often times two or more calls happen and the patient is forced, sometimes fatally to wait for Advanced life support care. If you live in the outer communities like Stallion Alpine or Bear Valley you are waiting 15 to 20 minutes no matter what your problem is. This is purely unacceptable we need another ambulance to match the growth of the community. The only reason we do not have an additional unit now is so Mayor Hall can maximize profits you wait and he gets paid while paying out as little as possible. Please everyone create discussion and call supervisor Mayben about this topic. If you plan to live out your life in Tehachapi at some time you will need emergency service will you wait on the floor like many do now? or help bring about change?

Thank you Tehachapi News for stating that the paper will do a story on this subject. This blog was only intended to inform the public and possibly bring about change. The greater Tehachapi area has seen a huge increase in population and our public service resources need to provide for that growth. At times this blog did skew off and some personal attacks took place. I for one would like to state that at no time was this intended to belittle Hall Ambulance Paramedics and Emt’s who currently serve our community. I along with the many other people feel that they are professional and do us all a great service which has helped and saved many lives. The main intention of the blog was to let the public know that waiting 20 plus minutes for I think that feelings aside more Paramedics no matter where they come from will only enhance public safety in our community. With knowledge of response times and population growth our public can decide if they feel properly protected by current coverage. Thank you all for your input posted by

The second unit could be in cummings valley which would serve Stallion, Alpine, Brite, and Bear Valley with a much greater response time. These areas combined may now have a greater population than Tehachapi proper. The main issue is the placement of one ambulance. By having two units spread out in opposite ends of Tehachapi we would all be served better.

Hello Folks, I'm sorry I've been misunderstood with my intentions. Here's my final post on this subject: I strongly urge all readers of this blog to contact the Editor of the Tehachapi News prior to the printing of the upcoming article regarding this issue. Contact the Editor with your concerns with the idea that your concerns will be presented to Ross Elliott & Don Maben. As I've read here, the "main" issue is not having a 2nd unit in Tehachapi. It is response times to the outer areas of the Tehachapi Valley. I say this because, even with a 2nd unit in Tehachapi, the response times to these areas will not change. The posters & readers of this blog must impress upon County Representatives that a response time greater than 8 minutes is no longer excepted for the outer areas of the Tehachapi Valley. Please leave personal attacks for another time. A 2nd unit placed in Tehachapi will not get the response times you desire. Yes, it will reduce the number of incidences that a second 911 call is responded to by an ambulance coming from the desert valley. It will not reduce the response times as mandated by County EMS. Happy Holidays. posted by

Its good the Tehachapi News is doing a story on this. I hope the story is not all Supervisor Don Maben and Ross Elliott, director of the Kern County Emergency Medical Services Department saying that Hall is doing good. I am sure Hall is making "The Time" his 90%. The problem is the amount of time he gets to respond to places like BVS, SS and Golden Hills.

Hey, I'm starting my own ambulance service! I'm also building a new school, hospital, and a new fire satation in Golden Hills! Yep, I've won the lottery and I'm rolling in the dough. Don't we all wish it was that easy. If we don't like they way something is just do it yourself right. At least Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous feels that this is what we should do. Come on, let's get real here. Geesh. I find it very intresting that this blog has more anonymous statements than any other blog on here. Hummmm. posted by

Editor, thanks for reminding all regarding personal attacks. Attacks devalue one's remarks. I think we need an additional ambulance. Also, anonymous posts are allowed, whether taken seriously or not. That's the way it is.

The Tehachapi News will feature a story about Kern County's recently adopted ambulance ordinance in next week's issue, with commentary by Kern County Supervisor Don Maben and Ross Elliott, director of the Kern County Emergency Medical Services Department. We have held this story so that our reporter could get Elliot's input to more fully address the issues specifically concerning Tehachapi.
I would also like to remind bloggers to refrain from personal attacks, as it is a violation of our terms of service. posted by

Hey anonymous, it's great to have an opinion but how seriously do you think people take your opinion when you're afraid to let us know who's opinion it is?

I think eekitsaspider is a greedy person who only wants his/her pocket book filled--see I can have an opinion too. Get a life. If you feel that way start your own company so that folks with similar views and outlooks as yourself can throw barbs and narrow minded comments at you. Oh wait, that's too hard and one's own money would have to be invested and put at risk--its easier to toss rude comments and complain. It's so easy to call someone greedy (and who knows, the person that does it may be even more greedy than those who they toss such barbs at). So, shall we all really get nasty and rude with our comments? And, yes I do think we should have, and would appreciate, an extra ambulance.

I think Mr.Harvey Hall is a greedy man who only wants his pocket book filled. If there is a law out there that states there should be so many ambulances with this amount of population than Mr.Hall is breaking the law. I dont know about anyone else but i dont appreciate someone playing Russian roulette with people's lives like that. The general public needs to make this public and get this man off his duff and get another ambulance up here before it costs someones life.
