Top Five Favorite Films

I've been thinking about this for about a month, since I saw it on another message board. Making a list like this takes a bit of thought, IMHO. So here's mine, in no particular order at all.

Gross Pointe Blank

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

Any list like this for me must include at least one film with John Cusack. This one also has Dan Akroyd as a psychotic contract killer, so it kills two birds with one stone!

The Incredibles

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

I had to have one animated film, so this is it.

Fiddler on the Roof

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

My all-time favorite musical. And who can resist a young Paul Michael Glaser?

The Goodbye Girl

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

Just can't help but love a fuzzy-faced Richard Dreyfuss, and that wonderfully cynical Quinn Cummings. They're so cute when they're young!

Almost Famous

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

Wonderful music & soundtrack, but not really a musical. Touching comedy, but you may weep a bit too. And so what I picked two films featuring Jason Lee? Sue me...

;-)

Okay, so now it's the TN bloggers' turns. No bashing films on others' lists, but positive reinforcement is encouraged. Have at it!

This does require a bit of thinking, but I've come up with 3 out of 5:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail - If you can recite it word for word, it must be fabulous!  (I can do the same for Airplane! but I wouldn't generally admit it.)

Clerks - The greatest of all Kevin Smith's movies.  Back when Jay and Silent Bob's occupation wasn't watered-down.  Anyone who has worked a crappy customer service job can relate to it.

The Philadelphia Story - Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart... you can't go wrong.

Runners up for the final spots: Tombstone, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Kill Bill vol.1, Pauline and Paulette, Chocolat...

All of mine are comedies, so I'm trying to think of more serious movies.

There was a wonderful movie around 5-10 years ago about a little Japanese boy traveling to find his mother, but I can't remember the name of it.  Has anyone else seen it?

Only five?  Impossible!  OK, here's a try...

The Professionals - One of my favorites with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Claudia Cardinale, Woody Strode, Ralph Bellamy, Robert Ryan, and of course Jack Palance.  Everyone is outstanding in this movie.

Ben-Hur - The 1959 version with Charlton Heston.  He was the best!

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

The Guns of Navarone - Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Anthony Quayle, David Niven, Gia Scala, and a young James Darren

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

Touch of Evil - Charlton Heston again, Orson Welles acting and directing, Janet Leigh, and Dennis Weaver as a very nervous motel manager!

http://www.imdb.com/title/t...

Once Upon a Time in the West - Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards, Jack Elam, Woody Strode and Keenan Wynn.  Allstars!

It's just not possible for me to pick my favorite five!  Here is a list of my other favorites, and I'm sure I'll think of more as the day goes by!

Shane

To Kill a Mockingbird

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Wizard of Oz

Bridge on the River Qwai

Doctor Zhivago

Stalag 17

North By Northwest

Wow, as much as I love movies this is going to be tough, but here goes:

Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean - Sandy Dennis, Kathy Bates, Cher, Karen Black

South Pacific - Mitzi Gaynor, Rossano Brazzi, Ray Walston

Duel In The Sun - Jennifer Jones, Gregory Peck

Caveman (and I make no apologies, lol) - Ringo Starr, Barbara Bach, Shelly Long

My all time favorite:

Gone With The Wind - Clark Gable, Vivian Leigh, Olivia DeHaviland

this was hard...I could keep going! Maybe we should do them by genre, lol.

Tombstone and Breakfast at Tiffany's, both great movies Madkow.

Joty I saw Caveman, it was pretty funny!

And I forgot, Duel with Dennis Weaver, and of course Planet of the Apes!

I'm taking my son to go see Hancock tonight,  Has anyone seen it yet?

Tombstone was a great movie. I loved Doc Holiday

Olivia, I worked on it, but I'll save my review until after you've seen it.  I'm curious to hear what you think of it.

Old b/w movies, including off-beat film noir:  Shadow of a Doubt; Now Voyager; Double Indemnity; Laura; Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House; The Ghost & Mrs. Muir (oops, one too many).

Trivia:  Movies that reference the Tehachapi's Women Prison:  The Postman Always Rings Twice; Nocturne; The Hunted; Double Indemnity; Maltese Falcon; The Grapes of Wrath.

So many movies, so little time:  Wizard of Oz (am sure I have seen it over 50+++ times).

IMHO, all these movies are good and there's no swearing involved; I am not a prude, but how many times can you hear the "f" word . . . Even though some of the movies involve murder, at least in the old b/w movies, neither their head, nor other body parts are flying through the air, with the greatest of ease . . .

Great post, Ooochild ~

Several of my family members saw it...they all said good things about it. I look forward each summer to Will Smith's movies like Independence Day; Wild Wild West; I, Robot - nuts - brain fart...I can't remember the rest, but I've seen them all!

Didn't Tombstone and Wyatt Earp come out about the same time?

Offbeat film noir, how about Sunset Blvd.?  Remember a very young Jack Webb in that?

LOL, it seems most of us tend to think in terms of genre...

When I was thinking about this list, my idea was more in the lines of, "if you were stuck on a deserted island & had only five movies to watch over & over again, what would they be?" My movies are favorites 'cause every time I'm flipping through the channels, I have to stop & watch it, if it shows up on the list.

Ruby, how about Rebecca, for an old B&W?

Greg, lol, you remind me of my BIL. there's always a Western playing in the background at their house!

Joty, South Pacific is such a close second for my musical slot taken by Fiddler! Love it!

Great movies, everyone!

Gotta have westerns!  High Plains Drifter, For a Few Dollars More, The Commancheros, Rio Bravo, The Sons of Katie Elder, El Dorado, My Darling Clementine.

Although I didn't have a slot for them on my personal list, my favorite two Western films are The Cowboys and Silverado.

posted by Joty on Jul 7, 2008 at 03:19 PM

Silverado - Jeff Goldblum in those trousers - yowser.

A Place In The Sun - Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift (he was so hot, and so gay), Shelly Winters

Cape Fear - the original with Robert Mitchem

Night of the Hunter - Robert Mitchem and Shelly Winters

The Birds and Marnie - both Hitchcock flicks starring Tippi Hedren.

And I just read that Sigourney Weaver wants to make another "Alien" movie!

Gosh Joty, I forgot about Night of the Hunter, with a really young Peter Graves, awesome!  Haven't seen Cape Fear, though I love Mitchum.  Made me think of another good one, Key Largo with Bogart.  And of course, The African Queen, and The Barefoot Contessa.
