Could This Work Here?
After reading and re-reading this story, I thought how fantastic it would be to be able to do something like this here. With our epidemic pet abandonment rate, overflowing foster pet families (Leslie & Susie you're still my heroes!!), resources stretched paper thin, and STILL NO LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER in the near future this could be the answer. It seems to me to be a solution to a lot of local animal issue problems, please read it and share your opinion. Am I living in my own private Idaho or could something like this actually work?
We thought you might like this -SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT, AGAIN! Update on Joe Arpaio Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe! Maricopa County was spending, approximately, $18 million dollars, a year, on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and, the CountySupervisors said okay. The animal shelters are, now, all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays Every animal, in his care, is taken out and walked, twice, daily. He, now, has prisoners, who are experts in animal nutrition and behaviour. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has, literally, taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and, had them place in dog shows. The best part? His budget for the entire department is, now, under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner, from a Maricopa County shelter, two years ago. He was neutered, and, current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted, the day we got him. Cost us $78.The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but, most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals. 10 comments from 6 users

Its too bad the Sheriff cannot treat Latinos and Native Americans as well as he does the Dogs. Arpaio continues to racial profile Brown people even though the Mayors ask him to leave. Last weekend he and his men harassed Latino children at their Confirmation ceremony. Shame on him! posted by

ha ha Latino's and native Americans...........The proper words are illegal aliens. If they don't like it then they can leave. The differance between the dogs and the illegals is the dogs are legal. posted by

Vader the reason I said that is the Pro illegal immigration crowd refuses to acknowledge the word illegal. They will say immigrants or Latinos or even Native Americans where as their really talking about illegals. Arizona and many other states have enacted laws against illegal immigration and every day another community or state also passes their own laws against illegal immigration. The majority of American citizens want illegal immigration to end. It was once thought that they where here to stay but after seeing how well the laws in Arizona have worked in driving the illegal out of that state that belief no longer stands. So when I see someone refer to illegals as Latinos, like someone that belongs here I'll speak out every time. posted by

The reason for this posting was to get input as to whether a prison run animal shelter could work here in Tehachapi, what people think of the idea and any suggestions they may have to make it work. Illegal immigration, while a hot topic. has absolutely nothing to do with the topic posted. If you read the blog, you can't help but notice everyday there are lost/found/abandoned/abused animals from all over our fair city showing up in vast numbers. In my opinion, the potential to help and do good is huge. Can we get off the illegals and back to the topic at hand? posted by

sorry picturethis I get side tract-ed rather easily. Yes I think a program like this could work . I have no idea how one would go about getting one started. I think that the inmates would also benefit greatly from a program like this. posted by

Picturethis, I think it's a great idea, and certainly one for our local prison officials to consider. There are many programs across the country where prisoners work with dogs in various ways -- rescue and adoption, training service dogs, etc. It not only helps the animals, but it saves taxpayers money and, most importantly, gives inmates rewarding job skills they can use when released. It's also been proven to help them mentally and emotionally while in the prison system, making them less violent, by providing unconditional love that many of them may never have experienced. Win-win-win. posted by

Does anyone have any ideas or connections with our local prision system to find out who we can present this idea to and how to go about presenting it? Caninecreek, do you know where we can get copies of successful programs to use locally? posted by

What a terrific idea! Not only does it go a long way toward solving the pet death/shelter problem, but it gives inmates something to boost their self-worth, possibly decreasing reoffending percentages once the inmates are released. I lived in AZ for a few years, (yuk....). My parents live there now, and everyone they know thinks Sheriff Joe is the greatest guy in the state.
