An Old Book

I once had an old book on Metaphysics

(written before quantum mechanics)

when read front to back it was impossible

to understand, yet if you read it from back

to front, everything could be understood.

The meaning of life came out clearly.

Einstein’s theory of relativity was made

simple. Religion was explained. God was

identified. Our reason for being was clear.

Every enigma and conundrum of the ages

was answered, every Biblical parable was

explained and every single bit of man’s

philosophical muddles were clarified.

The book was then lost, misplaced or stolen.

So that now I know nothing. I’ve looked for it

in old and ancient book shops, on the Internet,

I’ve even prayed to find it, all to no avail.

Daffodils On Deer Trail

Daffodils white, yellow, gold, buds,

surround the long black driveway

shoots pushing up

green sprouting

bluejays announcing

woodpeckers busy

tiny oregon junkos singing

snow's gone

it's warmer day and night

sun's out more of the day

still some morning fog

bobcat kittens about

coyotes heard

gray squirrels howling

hopes and cheer here again

on Deer Trail in the spring.

population it explodes without end

its increase is a certain dead-end

plenty is the rule in this country

wealth and plenty are complimentary

poverty, rising food prices, hunger, riots

the world will never again need diets

who can afford petroleum, oil, plastic?

wow, it seems so very fantastic?

famine, fights, fright, death

unnecessary killing like MacBeth

population, plenty, poverty

intertwined with mediocrity

it’s inevitable, it’s a fact, a fear,

the world is at its sad nadir

a horrible situation I swear

what a sad world wide affair

high cost for elimination

of weapons of mass destruction

out of control DOD reconstruction

almost lost Iraqi oil production

we’ll never stop the insurgency

even with the latest surgency

even considering the urgency

to end this stupid emergency

how many soldiers will be killed

their young lives suddenly ended

or hopelessly severely wounded

our leaders completely self-willed

the world viewed our image

all through this asinine scrimmage

as though we pay homage

to some strange pile of garbage

what about a new paradigm

leading to simple peacetime

diplomacy instead of wartime

not continued war crime

let’s throw all the bastards out

sure a new president without

old baggage could no doubt

lead us without a cop-out

let’s bring home those GI’s

get our politicians to advise

an end to our UN allies

end this is what I visualize
