what are we putting into our bodies?

I was at the Farmer's Market today.  I ran into a couple of my new blogging friends.  I began to tell them about an Organic source for produce.  For the last year my family has been getting the majority of our fruits and vegetables from a CSA (community supported Agriculture.)  What started out as 10 families meeting every Saturday in the Kmart  parking lot to pick up our basket of goodies, has turned into 100 + Tehachapi families picking up  vegetables.

I was raised in Iowa, and have fond memories of going out to our two huge gardens and eating fresh veggies straight from the garden.  Whether it was eating a green pepper like an apple or eating fresh peas straight out of the pod (i am able to do this right now in my own garden), I enjoyed the freshness and the quality.

Except for my own garden, I had never found fresh produce that met my standards.  Until my wife suggested we try this CSA.   The vegetables and fruit are grown in the central valley and are harvested within 72 hours of delivery.  Every week you get a box of organic fruits and vegetables.  The CSA has two choices of boxes,  a small that feeds 1-2 folks for 16.80  and a large box that feeds a family of four for 28.80 .  They have available add-ons such as organic grains, nuts, eggs and organic chicken.

I can say that I have never felt cheated, and it has allowed my family to try all sorts of new veggies and expand our diet.  Who knew turnips could be so good.

I make not a penny, but tell you only so that you can experience locally grown , organic fruits and veggies.  So go to www.abundantharvestorganics.com and check them out.

You will be supporting farmers who have made the choice to grow food responsibly without chemicals and pesticides.

reffup, how did I miss you tonight? I was every where. What about all the police @ the Chevron strip searching that guy & his car, to finally haul him off, bummer, crime doesn't pay, at least not in our town. Joty, did you get the 411 on that? you had a good seat, right? I've heard of the lil shindig @ K Mart thanks for the reminder, & the 411. You get whatever they bring you, huh? I like diversity.

We love our veggies from abundant harvest also!  They just added a downtown pick up spot - at Mama Hillybeans, or you can pick up at Country Oaks Church. They deliver every Saturday morning at 10:30am (church) and I think 11:15 for Mama's.  Just specify where you want to pick up when you sign up.

Also, I will add that for our family of 5 (3 small children) we get the small box for $16.80 per week and it is a TON of food. We sometimes can not use it all and give to neighbors and friends.

This is a great place to get ORGANIC fruits and veggies at wholesale prices. I do enjoy our local farmers market, but abundant harvest is year round.  Check it out...

We get the large box for our family of five and almost always get through it.  It does occasionally involve searching for recipes on how to use some veggies

I was the third little piggy and went to the Farmer's market an hour before the wolves came out.  I met Big Dog and Olivia on the way to my car.  Guess I missed the excitement :(

Does that mean you had roast beef, reffup?

Talking about beef. I've cooked and eaten only elk since October. I'm hooked on that. It is so much better than beef. I had a Mc D burger the other day and almost gagged. Tonight I had some very delicious bison. I also eat feral pig as well.

Yeah, I love fresh produce too.  My wife and I have been eating more fruits and vegetables in the last year than ever before.  The Organic Produce place open on Saturdays in Cummings Valley has some great lettuce and lots of other stuff too.  The guy on the west side of Hwy 202 that is only open on Sundays has some really good fruits and veggies and at great prices.  I was a little shocked to see that the FM had grown in size, but there was very little in the way of fruits and veggies, wonder why?

no the third piggy who built is home of brick ;)

yes i will be happy to share recipes with you.  The started dropping off at Kmart (no longer do) now they have two drop off locations Country Oaks Baptist on Shout Rd. and Mama Hilly beans.

I was dissappointed as well GregL, in the number of fruit and vegetable vendors.  I am wondering if it was this way beacuse of the 4th or if high fuel costs have kept vendors from coming.

This is beyond wonderful; the website you mentioned is awesome, lists many recipes, and shows the drop-off place to meet in Tehachapi:  That will be the next unofficial meet and greet for us bloggers (smile).  Thanks for the good info and happy 4th of July to all.

I'm waiting to ask my hubby, but I'm thinking we'll sign up too.  It sounds like a great deal for such fresh produce!  Thanks for posting this!
