Something that really bugs me

I don't know about all you guys, but when I read other people's blogs or comments, I automatically lose a certain amount of respect for what they write if they obviously don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," "there" and "their," etc...a few typos here and there are fine, but when you consistently do it, it's really annoying IMO.

Dude you graduated the valedictorian of your class most of us didn't. I got a GED. I will be the first to say I can't spell worth a crap. Thank God for spell check. No where in the ground rules does it say correct spelling and punctuation is required to post comments on this site. I do try and reread my comment before I post it and correct my mistakes. I'm sure many get through. This sounds like a Pet Peeve of yours and I those can be aggravating. Good luck on this.........

Poor linguistic ability doesn't bother me so much on the blogs because I assume the writers are not editing their posts.  Linguistic failing in a Letter to the Editor or in a business document does succeed in lowering my opinion of the writer.  [ I once read a document at work and I wondered aloud if the person was drunk when it was written (I was young and inexperienced in office decorum).  Unfortunately, the writer was my supervisor and he was there to hear my editorialization.  Yeah, bad move. ]  In my opinion, it has become common to speak commonly and that has evolved into writing commonly.  It's the "dumbing down of America" that some philosophers warned of several years ago.

Every now and then I catch myself committing a grievous error in my grammar.  I cringe to think of the errors that slip by me!  I hate when people mix up their homonyms too.  I'm very frustrated when I catch myself using the wrong "there" or "its".  I majored in Writing, for heavens sake!  It shows how easy it is to forget how to write when it isn't practiced everyday.

On a similar subject, my husband was trying to convince me that "ain't" was going to become an accepted word someday.  It doesn't make sense!  It's trashy!  It it that difficult to say "isn't" or "aren't"?!

I remember reading Huck Finn and learning about the boldness of Mark Twain for writing colloquially.  At the time, it was groundbreaking.  Now it's common for prose writers to use grammar (improperly) to further their story.  A great book to illustrate this is "Random Acts of Senseless Violence" by Jack Womack.  Poets have been breaking grammar rules for decades; it's great to see writers do it in prose.

yea it's a pet peeve, but come on, it doesn't matter what position you are in the class when you graduate, you should still have basic knowledge of how to use the english language when you are done with high school and when you are an adult communicating in the real world.

rm6 your still just a baby and writing is still fresh in your mind. Come back in 30 years and we'll talk. Many of us went years without having to do much writing, at least I did. Hell if it wasn't for blogging my writing and spelling would be much worse. It is amazing what you forget when you don't write for years. Now that you have told us about your pet peeve be prepared to have jerks like me puposlly mispell word fore youre bennefit. We'll talk in 30 years.

Actually this is a pet peeve of mine to, BUT I have caught myself several times doing it. I honestly don't care. If the post is otherwise constructed well I normally just breeze over it. I have a hard time when peoples spelling is really bad or they are purposely spelling things wrong- That drives me crazy!!

Seriously though all in all this is a blog no one is coming on here to get graded on their spelling and grammar skills. I for one know my punctuation is horrible! LOL  If I want to get judged and graded on my writing skills I'll take a writing course online. :)

No I really don't care that much either, I was just voicing my opinion...and gube I wasn't trying to take a swipe at you, I don't know what age has to do with being able to speak and write correctly, you use the language ever day, but whatever, I just don't want to hear you complain about immigrants not learning english if you can't use it properly either.
