Farmer's Market
I agree! Previously, the produce vendors were in the park, where there was shade for them and their produce and for shoppers also. The market is held during the hottest part of the day and many people cannot tolerate the heat. People with repiratory problems and especially the elderly, do not need to be out in the heat of the day. And to move the produce vendors to the hottest part of the street? Who made that decision? It's supposed to be a FARMER'S market, not commerical business... I went once this year and don't plan to go back unless things change. 34 comments from 18 users

Awww, come on now Gube. The FM was disappointing compared to last year. There were hardly any fruit and vegetable vendors and many more trinket booths. posted by

Last week was my first trip to the Farmer's Market... I was expecting lots of home grown produce and very little else. Instead, there was very little produce and LOTS of other booths with the same 'crap' you find at any street fair. We bought some tomatoes, plums & nectarines and left... that's it for us. posted by

I know that one of the guys at the Organic Produce place in Cummings Valley was telling me that because of a cold spring, many crop harvests were late this year. I'm hoping that's the reason for so few fruits and veggies at the FM. I'll check it out again, probably in two weeks, and hopefully there will be more. posted by

I guess we got discouraged when they started adding all the "other stuff", & the focus was no longer the fruit & veggies. I don't know, we kind of just stopped going. There used to be an elderly couple w/ the ugliest oranges, I'll tell you they were awesome. Unfortunately they haven't been there for a couple of years. I went Thursday, w/ no expectations, & got some killer nectarines, peaches & plums, I'm almost positive it's the man from Cummings. I also got some great little eggplants that we cut in half w/ some evoo & threw those on the grill. Yummy. I went late, around 6;00, it was nice then, just starting to cool off. Vendors were already starting to leave though. It's fine for me, but I sure can see how it would be difficult for the party's you mentioned. posted by

I too was disappointed. I will keep getting my veggies from the abundant harvest and supplement with the grimmway farms stand on Saturday and Mossner's on my way home for 'mater's!!! Will give the farmers market one more shot this week to make sure the vendors weren't an anomaly caused by the 4th of July.

If the FM is going to continue to grow such as it has, it needs to be moved to the park where there's shade and somewhat better parking and doesn't create such a traffic jam. Even if it doesn't grow any more, it should still be at the park for the reasons mentioned earlier. Customers going to businesses that are still open on the side streets have to park blocks away. Then there's the corner where there's no sidewalks at the moment, and that's a lousy mess. Wouldn't all of you rather go to the shady park than stand on the hot concrete and have a little better place to park? Have restrooms to use if you need to. I've never understood the thinking of having it on the blvd. Perhaps more fruit & veggie vendors would show up. It does seem to have gotten quite commercialized. posted by

This was my first year attending FM. I was curious why they called it Farmers' Market. It looked more like a swap meet - then someone pointed me in the direction of the produce. I agree, putting the farmers on the hot pavement was someone's stupid idea. The vendors and services (including the STOP booth) need to be on the hot pavement, not the fruit and veggies! posted by

When I went last year, it was a pleasant stroll through the grass picking out some great fruit and veg for the next week and picking up a brat w/ kraut to take home for dinner. It was nice and shady, intimate, and there was always some fun (if not always great) music to serenade me. I tried the sweet corn and that was a positive find (though I think those were there last year, I just never got one). The change in atmosphere this year is definitely a negative one. It has gotten too big, which may or may not be a bad thing except for the fact that it's too big for the venue it's in now. I agree with the park idea. posted by

I went to the Farmers Market for the first time a few weeks ago. I Was suprised. I expected to see much more fruits and veggies. To be honest, most of the vendors don't have anything worth stopping to look at. It seemed like a bit more of a garage sale with knick knacks and odds and ends then a FM. I think something should be done, whether it's moving the location or moving the current vendors into more desirable locations. It seems pretty clear that most everyone that goes, is going to pick up some produce, so they should really give those vendors the pick of the place. posted by

I think the artists at the FM would take exception to your remarks Smokey...hardly "garage sale" items. I agree though, that the focus should be on the farmers and their produce. If I want Arbonne or Mary Kay or Avon, I'll call a rep. Same for real estate and insurance...that's not why I go to a FM! posted by

I have not been to this years Farmer's Market but feel they need to move it to a safer location for people to walk. Last Thursday I forgot about it and drove through town. I was waiting in line to go through the intersection and saw nothing but people crossing the street while the Crossing guard tried to stop them to allow cars to pass. Finally it was my turn to go and some ladies with kids just started to walk in front of me. The Crossing Guard kept waving at me to go and didn't notice the group walking through. Then as I started to drive, on the other side a father with his daughter just started to run in front of me. Thank God I didn't hit the little girl because she was almost directly in front of me. In the past I thought the location was a little troublesome due to the volume of people, but now that they made it where the Farmer's Market is split into two sdes of the street it looks to be have a deadly situation on the horizon. posted by

Who would one contact to voice their concerns and complaints. Is it the city, parks & rec , or main street. I never have been quite clear on that one. You're right jer72. Even with the crossing guards, people just jump out from everywhere and one of these fine afternoons, someone is going to get bumped or hit. Somebody just wasn't thinking when they set this mess up. The idea of a farmers market is great, just where it is, isn't so great. |
