Half mowed lawns
I love Tehachapi. It is a great small town and place to live. I just wish that some people took more pride with their homes. I drove by a place yesterday that had one side of their lawn freshly mowed, and the other side of the driveway wild with weeds.

I think that might have been my house, LOL! Our yard is a work in progress.... takes time and money. I understand why some people's yards look they way they do. It's hard work... I swear our backyard has weeds as tall as some of our smaller trees. I look out there and KNOW I need to chop them, but I usually don't have time to until 8 or 9pm. By then, I'm not as eager! posted by

Have you considered that the mower might have broken?Perhaps they just weren't finished yet, have health/allergy issues, etc?I go ballistic over mutilated trees,so I kinda get the idea, but having been the person who couldn't repair her mower and often couldn't afford to pay to have it done-I have to point that out that there could be a perfectly reasonable explanation. posted by

Maybe they ran out of gas... or had to siphon the fuel from the mower to the car to get to work.... Reference the blog on the current price of gas. :) posted by

Maybe they just like unaltered grass more than the boring nuetered monoculture that has somehow become the suburban ideal. If "pride in your home" means making your yard a chemically-charged wasteland, fit only for gophers and snails, where a wild flower can never raise its head, I'll pass on it, thanks. posted by

I agree 100% with spock. There is a house in my neighborhood that is driving me absolutely crazy. There are weeds for days. I am guessing now that they foreclosed on it and it is bank owned. Regardless, it just sits there getting worse and worse as each day passes. It makes me want to pull out my hair every time I look at it. Having a well-maintained yard shows that you do take pride in your home and care about the appearance of your neighborhood. posted by

Smokey--surprise your neighbors and run over there and weed wack it yourself. The rest of your neighbors may join you and then the eyesore may not look so weedy! It may unite your neighbor hood! Serve lemonade and a snack! Have a pot luck picnic afterward! Get to know your neighbors! posted by

Sure, what's a little trespass and vandalism between neighbors? Why am I, among several who repeatedly insist on tolerance, diversity, and the recognition that what one person thinks of as "right" may be the opposite of what another person thinks of as "right", alone in calling for Freedom of Lawn? Why are you insisting that everyone worship at the same Church of Turfgrass? posted by

IF I had a "showcase" yard, I know I might be frustrated with neighbors who did not put a lot of effort into their own yards. However, as the eyesore on my street, I have no room to talk! If everyone wants to meet over here on Saturday, I'll buy the pizza! LOL!

Isn't that why HOA's were invented? So folks could all impose their will on how everyone's property should look? And you get to pay for the privilege! ;)

lol...what one considers weeds are probably my wildflowers up here in the canyon. Living in basically a desert, I don't understand having lawns anyway. Scott, that's precisely why I live in Sand Canyon - there ain't no such animal! I pay $110.00 a year for the dirt roads to be maintained and that's it. posted by

Having a Homeowner's Association helps but there are always 'mavericks' who move in and then defy anyone to tell them what to do with their property, even though they live in an area subject to the 'rules' and knew it before they bought property. Infantile behavior, IMHO. If you don't want to comply with the 'rules', move to an area where you are free to let your weeds grow waist high and junk up your property with dead cars and rundown sheds.... like Sand Canyon! posted by

I love a nice yard. I could give a rat's a** if my neighbors yard looks like a junk yard. If I had the time and money my yard would look great, which by the way....it looks like crap right now. Who cares what someone else's yard looks like. Jeeze, it's their yard. Unless the smell is whifting my way I'm alright. ( is whifting a word )....??? |
