Half mowed lawns
I love Tehachapi. It is a great small town and place to live. I just wish that some people took more pride with their homes. I drove by a place yesterday that had one side of their lawn freshly mowed, and the other side of the driveway wild with weeds.

spock sorry about the dead dogs rotting on the side of my House but they were beloved family pets that we want to bury in the back yard as soon as the ground gets soft enough from soaking it with water. Right now the ground is rock hard. One dog got ran over by a car as it was playing out in the street in front of our house and the other dog just died unexpectedly. Anyway I went to the store and bought some of that carpet freshener powder stuff and covered the dead dogs so I hope that the dead dogs wont stink so bad. So far the neighbor haven't complained so the powder must be working As far as mowing the side of the driveway that has tall weed.......well that is where the dead dogs are right now and I'll mow it after I bury them. The 1922 rusted Oldsmobile is actually my kids fort. They wanted me to build them one but because I am to lazy and fat to build them a fort they decided to use the old rust bucket as a fort instead. p.s. I spent all my money on the lawn mower and I don't own a shovel to dig the graves.....can I use yours////////////// posted by

olebluelight says... "I like my yard natural, I collect classic junk cars to restore when I retire." according to your profile, you are a "retired" law enforcement officer. If you're retired.. it's time to get those junk cars restored There's nothing 'classic' about junk cars until you restore them... posted by

Olebluelight, you say "consider even the fact that someone would post a blog against the appearance of their neighbors place to be idiotic and un-neighborly." Everyone is entitled to an opinion of course, mine is any neighbour that doesn;t have the decency to keep thier property maintained, free of garbage and debris, free of tumbleweeds and other non-essential crap, is un-neighbourly, un-sanitary and generaly trashy. If you want your yard to look like a junk yard, if you want the 'freedom' to grow your weeds 5 feet high, if you want the 'natural' look, please don;t live anywhere close to me. Not only is it unappealing to look at and decreases property values, having garbage and debris clutter your yard is also a breeding ground for rodents/snakes/etc. There is no excuse for being to lazy to get off your a** and make your property look presentable. Have some standards, have some pride, and if you don;t have either of those, then when you drive around tehachapi and see all the run down, garbage filled lots, unkept lawns, trash, filth.you can thank yourself. IS that really the type of env't you want to live in? It is beyond me why some people have such low standards of what is acceptable. posted by

I don't know who this GUBE guy is, but I am appalled that he or she would condone rude behavior and name calling. I was taught early on when I was attending Columbia University, that name calling is the substitute for inteligent, respectful discussion. As an educated woman, I have learned to appreciate neat, clean, well-kept homes, yards etc., and the people that are associated with them. Defending slovenly behavior is frankly beyond my ability to rationally understand. It would seem to me that if a person enjoys disarray and a slovenly lifestyle, one would choose to live in a place such as Sand Canyon, Mojave, or Ridgecrest. Clearly there are many people there that share in this kind of behavior. Perhaps that is where this Gube person has his or her abode. posted by

At Columbia, did they teach you that you characterizing people as "slovenly" was part of respectful discussion? Of course, if slovenly behavior is really beyond your ability to understand, Columbia's educators failed you. A Roman playwright of the 2nd century BC famously said "Homo sum: humani nil a me alienum puto" (I am human, therefore nothing human is foreign to me), but maybe you got it backwards and nothing foreign is human to you....

Mrs Spock your a jerkett........Whats wrong with sand canyon? I know several people that live out there and they are not whinny little be aitches like you. You sound like a BVS snob......................Not all of us can afford illegal alien's to mow our lawns and pull our weeds. One reason that I live in Golden Hills is there are no stupid step-ford rules. I do not tell other people what they can do on there property and I don't care if you like or dislike what I do on my property. I have some advise for you................When you drive by my palace keep your eye's forward and don't look at the tall weeds. posted by

I clearly stated that: the BEHAVIOR was slovenly, not the people themselves. And, that the DEFENSE of slovenly behavior was beyond rational understanding, not the the behavior itself. It is important to recognize important distinctions, before launching a return salvo... posted by

Dear Mr Gube: I don't know where your PALACE??? is, and if I did, it sounds like I would avoid your street as well. Also, I have worked very hard all of my life to get ahead and achieve success, both in getting an education, and in using it to achieve some manner of wealth. Employing fine young folks to take care of my yard, cook my meals and launder my cloths is one of the benefits to me of such efforts. Anyway. the gardeners have told me that they are from Puerto Rico, which is an USA territory. My maid is from Lithuania, and the man that brought her to me also told me that she was here legally. You could afford to have fine help like this perhaps, if you had a job besides blogging night and day and calling people names! posted by

Spock, your distinction is a distinction without a difference. Behavior refers to the behavior of people and slovenly behavior is what slovenly people engage in, by definition. As for a defense, people - assuming they are rational - always do things for a reason. One only needs to understand those reasons, and why they made sense to that person to defend them. That you, or any number of other people don't agree with the reasons does not make them indefensible. It was your claimed inability to achieve understanding that made me salvo the quote in the first place.

Here's a slovenly person standing in the ugly yard he is being prosecuted for in Indiana. We could use a lot less of that in what is supposed to be a free country. posted by

PD... who cares what happens in Indiana? They have their own guidelines and if this man (whom you describe as slovenly, although he appears to be neatly dressed) really is being prosecuted for his yard, then I have to give Indiana credit for having a sense of pride in their community. A weed-whacker, a lawnmower and maybe a brush hog in this man's case would make a world of difference in this particular yard. Overgrown vegetation is a sign of laziness in many cases.. or mental illness in other cases... or maybe a widow who just needs a helping hand from a neighbor. This man looks healthy and strong enough to take care of business so my guess would be that he's just lazy or has that "who gives a s**t what the neighbors think" attitude that seems to be prevalent on this blog. posted by

Water, not time, is what makes grass green and we should use less of it. Rather than breaking our backs, or breaking up families half-a-world away in pursuit of the expensive folly of maintaining a Better Homes and Garden ideal (an ideal based on the country gardens of England, where rain is plentiful year-round), we should get real, accept the environment we've got, and build our landscapes using native planting, of which green turf-grass is definitely not. |
